Nikkor lenses repair manuals

Hi all,

I know this is going to be very difficult but I'm looking for any Nikkor AIs lens repair manual and specially 35/1.4 and 85/1.4. Not that I was going to disassembly mine, it is just to know how they are inside.

I would NOT try to disassemble one, as there are many critical adjustments on reassembly. The NIKON CAMERA REPAIR HANDBOOK by Tom Tomosy has several chapters on lenses, including disassembly.

I haven't even thought about disassemblying them. Knowing me a little bit, I leave any DIY for technicians and specialists. It was mere curiosity.

I have worked on one 85mm 1.4 and several 35mm 1.4 in different versions. Both are 7.5-8 on a scale of 10 of difficulty. Both have rear CRC, with a rear group of elements that need to be set correctly back into the proper line of helicoid threads for the lens to focus correctly. The final assembly of lens barrel into helicoid unit requires a patient line up of 3 different pins and levers into slots and under levers. Not an impossible task, but I really don't suggest trying it unless you have repaired many other Nikkors. I have the manual for the 35mm Ais 1.4 but all it really shows is the spilt lens diagram and the exploded view, with a big parts list. The MIR site for Nikkors might show the same view. I would use them and enjoy these two lenses, which I consider 2 of the very best Nikkors of all.

The 85 is new (for me) and I found it didn't focus at infinity and has a little stiff focusing ring. I have sent it to a repair shop and expect to get it back today.

Although I have several other lenses (from 20 to 200 mm), I usually carry just two or three of them at a time. For some months I have been using 28/2, 50/1.4 and 105/2.5, but felt a little bit uncomfortable because usually I needed something in between 28 and 50 or, on the other way, between 50 and 105. Now, I'm using the 35/1.4 and a 85/2, waiting for the 85/1.4 to arrive.

This is my first post as I just joined this group. I have repaired Nikkors since 1973 and both of these lenses easy repairs for someone that knows what they are doing,and just as easy to mess up for those that don't . The Nikon manuals do not give detailed disassembly or reassembly directions.Only parts views, parts #'s, and specs. etc. I'd be happy to help with any repair questions.

Thanks for your offer, Dave. I just have curiosity to see hoe these lenses are inside. My hands are like a bunch of sausages (freely speaking) in terms of DIY, so I don't want to remove a single screw.

By the way, the 85/1.4 is back from the shop and works wonderfully.

Does anyone know how to remove the hand rotated focusing ring on a nikkor-h 18cm f/2.5 lens? I have removed the barrel, nearest to the the rear of the lens, that the tripod adapter is attached to, and the internally helical threaded focusing barrel that rotates inside of the above mentioned barrel. They were easily removed, but I do not know how to remove the hand operated focusing ring.
