Review
I received my copy from Amazon last night. I have to say that this is a very fine book. When the "101" book came out they included Sommer's Aperture issue, but I suspect they would switch their recommendation to this one now. The reproductions of the photos are just outstanding, and the writing is very well done. I think that nearly all of the text from the Sommer Aperture issue is included with many of the same prints, and there is a substantial amount of additional material as well. The biographical outline and the writings by Sommer in the back are extremely interesting reading, going into details about Sommer's life and philosophy and his involvement with a great many influential artists and photographers - many that I had no idea he was connected with. Of course, there is mention of his friendship with E. Weston and a portrait of Sommer by Weston is included. A variety of work is represented (collage, photos, watercolor, etc.) but even if you are just interested in the photography there is more than enough here to justify the purchase.
I'm not connected to the publishers in any way, of course.
Thanks,
Will
