well i bought my first ever enlarger...a 45 bw omega for 175.00. it was not on ebay or garage sale, but at a camera shop of all places. it also includes a 35mm lens and tray that you can slide the negative through the side and locks down when bring the head down on it. the guy i know that sold it to me said he would get me a carrier for next to nothing for it. have to re-learn all this stuff...as i haven't done anything like this since high school. it has 2 condensers and a area to place filters in above the condenser. does anyone else have one of these? if so let me know what you think of it. from what i am told, they are one of the better ones available out there now. anyway...gotta go, have to get ready for work. hope to hear everyone soon!

Hi there
Congradulations on the good buy. 175 for an omega 4x5 is a good price,
one small thing, if you are to print 35mm negatives you will require a 50mm enlarging lens.

And, since you shoot 4x5, for 4x5 you'll need a minimum 135 mm lens, 150 mm better. The 50 mm will go in a flat lens board, while lenses longer than 80 mm go in a short cone, and lenses longer than 135 mm go in a longer cone (assuming it's a D and not some other Omega). And of course you'll need a 4x5 carrier.

It'll do good work for you, once you've got everything you need, though.

Do you know the model number of the head? If it's a D2V head (one that allows you to move the top condensor lens around for different lenses) then it's the same as the one I have and I'd be happy to answer any questions that you have. Also, the site www.classic-enlargers.com has a ton of information on Omega enlargers...and almost any question you might have has probably already been answered in the forums.

Be well.

Once again a very good bargain.

I would suggest a glass carrier as one of your first purchases. With this carrier you can print any format by blacking out the back side of the glass with electrical black tape .As well this is the best way of keeping sharp prints. The heat of the head draws the center of the negative and during multiple exposures the negative pops without glass.

Here are some unsolicited suggestions when using this enlarger.

- find a bracing system for locking down the top coloum, this will make alignment easier and permanant.
- I use the 250 watt bulbs on this unit, not recommended but gives me one stop more power. burn out more bulbs though.
- If you are handy mount the enlarger on a solid wall and build a drop table , instead of using the baseboard on a table.*Remember , I said if you are handy*
-When setting up a negative , I always start with the easel centered to the circle of light projected with no negative in place.* This is very important with this enlarger as moving the easel off center will give you soft edges on your print.
-a small bit of lubrication on the moving parts every so often will make this unit happy.
-Usually the coloumn is in rough shape on a used Omega, the paint is scrapped off where the lift up and down has worn away, Just paint the coloumn black where this has happened or you may start seeing flare in your prints. It will drive you crazy.
-I leave the head in the up position when not using.* this was suggested years ago to me and it makes sense as the head may settle and get out of alignment.
-put your head on the easel and look up with a lens cap on the lens. turn on the enlarger and you will see any light leaks . Do a *Red Green* and plug the holes.
-sometimes the condensor glass is dirty, *be carefull and gently clean the glass*
-looking from the bottom again take off the lens cap and you will see what condition your lenses are in. *be careful and gently clean the lens or take to a expert for cleaning*

*After this is done , put a piece of paper in the easel and start having fun*

i don't know if i mentioned this or not, but the guy who sold me the enlarger also gave me the following:
1-35mm lens and carrier
1-mf carrier
1-4x5 lens and a almost brand new carrier....all for nothing...all i paid was the 175 (plus tax).
i will not be spending too much more for a least 6 months on equipment costs as i can't afford it right now. he said that he'd rather sell it to me and know i'd get more use out of it than setting there collecting dust and comments on it. i my honest opinion, i don't believe i could not have gotten a better deal for what i have now than if tried again somewhere else. for what i got with it the only way i could getting a better deal for me to get for free. i can't to get working with it....am looking around for books on dark room setups and useages. any ideas??? let me know...will be waiting! later
