I debated between two different topics, but I think I have happily settled on "Surprise/Unexpected".

Did you stumble upon something you weren't expecting? Did you capture someone else's surprise? Please interpret however you wish.

My thoughts behind this were based on this photo I took last year. I was walking between buildings at work (an odd mix of modern and fake old) and came across a giant blow up duck. I cackled, snapped a photo, and then kept on.

I will let a mod add the rules, etc.

And it shall be so!

MODERATOR'S ADDITION: A very interesting theme indeed.

Here is a copy of the rules for the MSA:

[UPDATED] Monthly Shooting Assignment Guidelines

Here are the guidelines that a number of participants in the MSA put together over a number of cycles. They have been recently revised
MSA Guidelines
For first-timers, the following summary of standard procedures should help (we are indebted to Ken Nadvornick for putting most of this together, and not objecting when this Member activity's moderator proposed to re-use [aka borrow] it):
(1) Take note of the MSA assignment, which you will find inserted into the title of the thread.
(2a) For the NEW Category, take your photo(s) according to the assignment guidelines. You are expected to shoot something new rather than grabbing from your archives. The exposure must happen during the period of the current MSA theme - usually one month - and must of course be submitted during that period.
2(b) For the OLD Category, you can use thematically appropriate Photos that you have taken in the past.
2(c) For either the NEW Category or the OLD Category, photos must originate as something that is consistent with Photrio's Analogue only section principles - i.e. using traditional (non-digital) processes. Scans from prints, slides, or negatives are permitted, but any digital adjustments should be strictly limited to what would be acceptable in the Photrio analogue only galleries. Please be sure to label which Category (OLD or NEW) your submission belongs in. Film and exposure information plus any special technical information is also good.
(3) You can post your photo in the MSA Gallery, or you can host your photo elsewhere and link to it in the thread, or, you can post it as an attachment to a message in the thread and it will show as a clickable thumbnail.
(4) It's all for fun, there are no prizes.
(5) at the end of the MSA, the previous winner who chose the theme:
(a) is encouraged to nominate from each of the "OLD" and "NEW" categories one photo that is the best photo in that category that illustrates the theme; and
(b) in any event, will choose (from those category "winners", if applicable) the single photo that is the best photo submitted as part of the current MSA that illustrates the theme.
The member submitting the "winning photo" will be declared the MSA "winner" and will have the opportunity and responsibility to choose a theme for the next MSA, and then choose a new winner from the submissions that follow.
Additional hints about uploading your photographs...
(6) How to upload to the MSA gallery: You perform the upload in the same way you would upload to the standard gallery, except you press the "'All subscriber galleries", you find a drop-down menu and press the Monthly Shooting Assignment, that's it.
(7) You can instead, attach your image to a post in this thread. Or you can link to an image that is hosted elsewhere - please be sure all members will have access to such images, and that the links remain current.
8) Most importantly, have fun!

I'll do my mini-moderator bit with updating the list of themes to date and the Sticky Thread designations.

It took me a while to remember this. It's from ten years ago, shot in a MESuper.

That is a live goose. And, yes, it decided that was its nest. This was in a strip mall in Brampton. Ontario.

I have a shot of a goose like that in a cemetery urn, Don!

While I was walking by the sea shore in 2012 [Old] I came across something between a homeless tent city and an artist collective. I was very surprised to see all sorts of sculptures made from discarded junk. I had my Pentacon Six and Sonnar 180mm f/2.8 lens with me, I think I was using Acros and HC-110.

I did not expect to find art in the middle of nowhere, and this sculpture of a human caused me to gasp when I first saw it, as I couldn't immediately tell what I was looking at.

There was a huge dragon, too!

Trying to find a surprise seems counter intuitive.... here is one from a few years ago.

That's a good point, and it may lead to more "old" photos this month. Hopefully, there is still a chance for some to capture an organic surprise.

I'm not sure these are a surprise but they were certainly unexpected. Very old approximately fifty years but a very memorable and delightful experience. During a trip to Spain and Portugal I had heard there were large sand dunes at Torreira, Portugal. At the time there were only two streets and a small Pousada with just a few rooms. We had a lovely room with a balcony over looking the lagoon including breakfast with hand squeezed orange juice at the table all for $6 (times have changed). We went to see and photograph the dunes and as we got to the top we had the UNEXPECTED. A beautiful oar powered boat and fishermen and their families pulling in the nets with oxen. They were very friendly and urged me to photograph them and their families. Someone got a boom box and we ended up spending five hours dancing and enjoying the company,
. Upon returning I made at least thirty 8x10 prints , had someone in the language dept. at the U of M translate and type a note. I mailed the box of prints to the person who gave me his address but I never heard back.
All were Tri-x 120 printed on Kodak Medalist as best I can remember.

"Car crash 1992" - This one was unexpected. I was riding with some friends from HCC, on our way to Club Castaway when we drove past this. I quickly got out my K1000 and fired off a few. I have no details about this crash.

May have been T-Max 100 and would have been developed in D-76 1:1 and was printed on Ilford Multigrade III RC.

(New) Minolta Maxxum 9, 28mm f2.8 Maxxum AF, Foma 100, LC-110

When checking my raised bed garden, the other day I was happy to find a few small zucchinis coming along nicely. Then, quite unexpectedly, under the canopy of several large leaves, I spotted this monster hiding. It is sixteen inches (406 mm) in length and around four inches (101 mm) at its widest width. Any good zucchini recipes are most welcomed!

That's a big one. My mother used to grow them and made zucchini bread. She ended up with a lot more than we needed so she sent me and my brothers out to sell them to neighbors, $0.15 each.

Zuccini and feta cheese is a delicious combination! I usually make a quiche with them.

These are OLD

URBEX LV - brīvlaišana. Found this little guy stunned on the floor - probably smashed right into the glass. So I inspected him and took to a nearest hole in the windows - took a picture and off he went. It seems that URBEX more than once is a life-saver

These are interesting, portraying the same day.
I took a bicycle to work in a foggy morning, and snapped this picture of a worker walking towards his tractor. When it was time to go home, couple of guys were guarding my path and not letting me through. I inquired and it turns out - the same tractor guy broke some power cables that are now sparking and making things burn.

Last year, a car crashed into the telephone pole in front of my house. The pole got severed and the top part just hung from the wires, the car itself did a flip in the air, landing on its tires... the couple in their 70s driving the car were miraculously mostly unharmed, the driver had been reaching for a sandwich that fell on the floor and yanked the steering wheel. The sound it all made (I was washing the dishes) was quite surprising and unexpected!

Great moody images @Ivo Stunga .

Rolleicord III type II TLR. T-Max 100 rated at 100. Developed in BT2B for 4:30 in bath A (72.7F/22.6C) and 5:00 in bath B (73.4F/23C). The bathroom was 80F/26.6C, room was 82F/27.7C. I did chill down the solutions some. I have never used BT2B beyond 78F/25.5C

"FedEx Bread"
1/100 at f/8 - The bread man got a heck of a deal with transport. Saved some money by taking a few FedEx trucks off someone's hands. This was a very tight shot. Only usable one. Literally was backed up at the right side of the store's building with a sign in my way and the sun was in my face.. The other side of the truck's letters were half rubbed off so I had to go on to this side and work very quickly.

#2 New image: 05/13/2025
"Plot Foiled"
1/50 at f/6.7 - This will look familiar to some.

#3 New image: 05/14/2025
"Lost my Ride"
1/50 at f/9 - Noticed this while walking up from Clark Avenue to South Street and at first I didn't have a camera with me. Had to go back home, pick up camera and retrace my steps. I see these things a lot.

#4 New Image: 05/14/2025
"Take a load off"
1/25 at f/19 - A little fuzzy movement here.. A man and his dog and someone else's couch.

I have been sick and so a bit behind on this thread. Great images so far. Keep them coming!

Adding a new one for fun, taken about two weeks ago: The surprise is that the photo came out at all. I have had terrible results with Catlabs X 320 both in 35mm and 120mm. Most of this roll was overly dark and moody even when overexposed, but the few IR photos I tried came out ok.
