Welcome to trying a new concept for the Monthly Shooting Assignment, which will have two categories:
1) Old prints and negatives, that were shot earlier this year, .. or perhaps decades before.
2) New prints and negatives taken only during the current month!

Please state the type of film used, the exposure settings ect, and of course, .. for the rest of us to know, the
entries will need to be labeled, Old or New, with the approximate date that the older images were taken.

A reminder that these images must be of an analogue nature, .. and please limit use of scanner adjustments
as well as digital post processing.

BTW ~ Understand that the winner will not be limited in creating a new theme, ... even if it has been used
before.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
So, OK, ... what do you say, lets give MSA a new try. .
This months theme will be centered on the “Holiday Season” that we are involved in right now.
Images must include references to this December Holiday Season, of :this year, ... or any past December.
Some suggestions:
Hanukkah Menorahs.
House, street, daylight and night scenes.
Parades.
Family sharing in a Holiday scene.
Christmas Trees, inside or out.
Decorations, inside or out.
Santa Clause coming to town and greeting anyone who notices him. ;-)
Be creative and use close ups, or distant landscape scenes of a Holiday sprit, day or night.
Now were going to have to perhaps dig into our old photos, but for sure going to grab one of our old cameras, maybe even all of them, and go shoot some new images of this holiday season and then develop them!.
.
So, ... whose going to be the first responder.. you or me? ... .. :smile:
I'm going to start with some wintery moods which (I hope) I managed to capture about a year ago. This is what Finnish december morning looks or at least should look like. I'm afraid this kind of winters will be rarer and rarer in the future.
It was a freezing morning at our log cabin. I woke up too early as usual and had a few hours to enjoy morning coffee before the sun begun shining. Our living room was originally a traditional Finnish chimneyless cottage. Nowadays it has a chimney, but years of heating it up with chimneyless stove in the 1800's tinted the walls black. And because its windows are small it's always quite dark in there. But I like it's special atmosphere and the contrast between it and the whiteness of snowy december morning. And that's what I like in christmas time: waking up slowly and going outside when the sun begins to shine. Maybe taking a cup of coffee or tea (which gets cold way too fast!) and a camera with me. Last year I found some fox tracks on a field nearby and photographed them with a Mamiya RB67. These are scans from the negatives, I haven't printed them in darkroom. Maybe I should.
I hope this december is going to look something like that too. So far it's looking promising. Today was quite cold when I visited our cabin, and there's some snow too. Not that much though. If I knew about this new theme I would have shot some new pictures!
Love the fox tracks in the snow and would love also to a see an image of your log cabin.
And yes the climate is changing.. Its was in the 70's here ;last week, very unusual for this time of year, and today it was 68*. But late this next week it is forecast for a freeze. So from some spring weather that has even caused our small white rose bush to bloom, it now is going to go into winter, ... bingo.
Looking forward to seeing some more images of the Holiday Season in Finland, maybe even Santa and his reindeer.
Peter, thanks for kicking-off a new MSA theme!
I'm going to follow Marttiko with more winter mood. We rarely get snow in December in my part of Texas, but in 2017, almost this same day of that year, we had significant accumulation (for us anyway) overnight. At sunrise I went out with a Spotmatic SP and shot a roll of Arista EDU 100 before heading off to work. Upon my return home that afternoon, all was melted.
From my side, too, it continues to be wintry - this photograph is from December 2020.
My daughter Maria feeding the birds in our garden.
The bird house is well frequented - various species of tits, sparrows, a pair of bullfinches, thrushes, starlings, a tame robin, chaffinches and, last but not least, a gang of squirrels,
which are rather unpopular with the birds (due to their lack of table manners).
Thank you, Peter for the new theme !
russljames, ... .. what a nice shot of the snow in Texas, simply unbelievable, without the photo proof of the event. :smile:
My daughter Maria feeding the birds in our garden.
She looks so happy filling the bowl with bid seed, and the birds watching for her to leave, so they to, can participate.
Keep em coming ..
I love this idea! I do have some photographs that fit this theme well, will just need to dust off the old scanner to get them uploaded.
Oh we can hear them singing, the high tone of gal, and the soft base tone of the guy, just can't quite make out the lyrics.
Can anybody tell me what they are? .
Very nice !
Oh, how joyfully; oh, how merrily
Christmas comes with its grace divine...
It's getting pretty cold last night and the tame robin decided to stay inside ...
No pics for the competition - excuse the crappy cellphone shots :redface:
61crbZND24L._AC_UL320_.jpg Hey forget the crappy cell phone shots, ya gave the warm Robin its due to be with you. :smile:
Sooooooo, .. have you and all your family .. come up with a nickname for it yet?
Hmmm, and maybe some way to identify it from all its other friends, when it warms up enough, that perhaps it may want to go outside again and feed at the snowed, .. cold feeder?
Or perhaps you will have to get an indoor decorative bird house instead!
Life in the snow globe. Today, Christmas Day 2021. Pinhole on FP-100C instant film, about 1/2 hour exposure.
Merry Christmas to everyone. Peter, thanks for trying to keep MSA alive and kicking :smile:
Oh my, a half hour Pinhole shot on 100C instant film... came out really well.
BTW we have been shooting Instax wide in a MF speed adapted film holder, but had no idea that instant film was available in 3.25 x 4.25.
Ah but yes, checking, .. it was, but not anymore... Sigh...
Still, .. what creative fun ... thanks and keep them coming for the survival of MSA :happy:
Unfortunately, it' s no longer being made. I still have some left, but when it's gone it's gone :sad:
The b/w was better for pinhole because the color shifts strongly to blue in long exposures!
Cheers!
Dang was going to run up to Flagstaff, to get a photo, in the daylight of the pine cone that hangs suspended from Wheatherford Hotel, for the last image and display, for the 2021 Holiday Season MSA O/N.
They would have dropped it for the New Year celebration at midnight, which is usually well attended, but it has been cancelled due to the new3 rise in Covid .cases.
So here's a shot of it, from the past, from a newspaper
So how about contributing one of yours, as the year and the month of December are coming to an end ... :surprised:
All right a new year begins and, we have to choose the winner for December 2021 Holiday season between the Old and New entry submissions.
For this month, NEW took the prize over the OLD, but it could have gone either way.
In the shock of snow in Texas for russlijames in 2017, or the wintery moods of Marttiko stepping out in a Finnish December morning a year ago. Or Macfreds daughter feeding the birds in the deep winter décor of 2020.
But it came down to the New entries of Nedl's long pinhole exposure, post 16, on Christmas Day, of a Holiday captured in a stilled Snow Globe, that is held in a sequence, within the warm home of a modern life.
~ and ...
The “Caroling” figurines, post 11, .. by russlijames, singing their hearts out in remembrance, celebration and joy of the moment that is, ... and to come. But the tonal quality of the image and its central focus, took the lead, ... so russlijames name a new theme!
You are not limited in creating this theme, ... even if it has been used before, for it will be your opinion and conclusion on how well it meets the concept of your thought.
So now in an updated MSA, there are two categories, and either can win, by your choice and discretion.
To be submitted can be:
Old prints and negatives, that were shot earlier, even decades ago.
~ or
New prints and negatives taken only during the current month that the theme is chosen for!
Congratulations @russljames.
We look forward to your new theme.
As peter has said - some revised rules, just one month now, and you can choose to use a theme that has been done before.
Probably best that it hasn't been used too recently.
Still analog.
