Walther Zapp actualy lived in Estonia when he got the idea and built the first prototype. He couldn't manufacture it here, so he went to Latvia.

I heard he got the idea for it from a dream, where he was at some party and saw a mysterious man holding a little object in front of his face. Every time he opened and closed the object, he took a picture.

Maybe this is common knowlege, but anyway...
