hey guys

I have fallen utterly in love with Jim Gallis Eddie Lens.

In search of the impossible I have fooled around and tried crazy stuff like you.. probably

I just got myself a Imagon 200 tiefenbildner in perfect shutter + all discs....And it looked similar to a soooooooo cheap Meopta Belar 210/4.5 in shutter, so i started playing around - just a little.

Result :

Removing the front element, this Belar will turn into a true monster wideangle Petzval/meniscus/cooke/Pinkham wide angle arhhhh....it is approx 180mm after removal of front element. Just let me tell you - this is so much nightmare and romance at once that i could not comprehend ;-)

Look these up if you like explosions, plenty of movement, Humpfrrrr effect

With front element attached, this lens is just shit, but ooooooh boy - Finally I can say out loud : screw this baby (Edt: Unscrew this baby)

It's called 'Zeiss Unar' and you will love it, just remove the front cell.

Actually, the Eddie lens was a 4" Bausch & Lomb Cinephor theatre projection lens of the petzval variety. I have no idea why it was so wild in it's characteristics. Nothing was reversed or tampered with, it was assembled correctly. These old petzval's only had to use just a tiny bit of the circle of illumination, the sweet spot if you will in the center to project an image from 35mm film. We are way beyond their design strengths and purpose using them on 4X5 sheet film at infinity focus. Glad you liked those

It got fitted onto a Sinar lensboard last night, and has to go on a second standard in front of copalshutter on Sinar P.

Drawbacks is gives round cornes on 5x7 - not sure if it is the copalshutter opening that is to small or the placement of lens 8 centimters in front of shutter.

Will try 4x5 later today on Polaroid 55

But it looks pretty cool ;-)

probably a simple achromatic doublet would get you most of the way there? Those tend to 'smear' the lens off linearly, instead of swirling it around in a circle.

my mistake, it should have read:

the converted Unar is soft focus, like a semi-achromat but softer. If you like, try focusing at f/11 and opening up to the soft focus effect you like, it does change by 1/3 f/stop. Yes, it does have a chemical focus shift also.

By added the front cell of a tessar to the rear cell of an unar, it doubles the focal length on mine and makes a very nice softer focus lens, but I really don't need a 33" f/11 that covers 20x24 at inf.

If you want an explosion, try mixing the cells between a 127/4.7 Ektar with a 203/7.7 Ektar, crazy look to it.

Phitz, I saw you comment about the Ektars... AS I have both of these. What elements did you swap to get the effect?
