I *just* pulled my very first 4x5 chromes out of the soup, and all I can say is WOW! Looking at 35mm slides is always kinda neat, but these LF transparencies just beat the heck out of the little stuff. E-6 is a whole lotta work, but dang, it's worth it.

They're in the dryer now, and I can't wait to get 'em out and give them a good looking over. Man, I feel like a little kid on Christmas morning! :smile:

Actually that is just what I was going to say. 35mm is cool, MF (67) is a big jump and way impressive, 4x5 is a major wow factor and mucho +++ than anything you have seen before, and 8x10 is totally F%&^*% A$%^&. I took a few 8x10 E6 slides into an art store down here, with a loupe and people were totally blown away.

I think the best thing I heard is "these things are so 3D" and they are, even 4x5. Very spacial.

Some guy walked into the Valley Photo Center here in Springfield with some 11x14 chromes... Holy Mohgley!!! Unfortunately, he had them printed digitally and to me looked no different than a 4x5 printed traditionally. ****Please, lets not start a flame war!!****

I shoot 8x10 chromes on occasion, but I have had internegs made of those that I really like (not all of them) and have prints made from the internegs.

Gene, what size did he have them printed to and what about the prints made you make the comparison above? No flame war intended, I'm just curious.

Wait until you get a 20 x 24 chrome on the light table, just make sure you have nitro pills handy, cause they will stop your heart!!!!

They were printed just slightly smaller than 11x14 and didn't have the same sense of 3-dimensionality as the chromes. They were no sharper than some of the 11x14 prints I have made from 4x5 negs. I was disappointed with the sharpness and clarity of the prints he had.
Prints from an 11x14 should have a stronger sense of place, a much more real sense of being there in the surroundings. Why shoot 11x14 if you get the same results with 4x5.
The chromes were wonderful... the prints disappointing. I hope this makes sense.

I think you are safe. I don't believe that Fuji makes Velvia in a size that large. :D

Was transparency film really available in 20x24 at one time?
Wilhelm, I shared your reaction when I saw my first 4x5 trannies two years ago. Even though the subject matter was so-so and there were some focusing problems, it was still a real eye-opener.

It does.

For me, I find anything larger than 4x5 just doesn't meet my style of shooting - with fast changing light, I need to be able to react quickly.

To my thinking, ULF chromes are best desplayed as one-off artworks unto themselves, probably mounted on a custom light box and frame. If I were going to make prints as the final product I don't know why I'd want anything above an 8x10 because drum scanning really large, one of a kind chromes is awfully risky (5000 rpm drums) and their is no point in making a mediocre scan of a $100 plus sheet of film.

I guess I'd want to scan the film for a website display and reference, but gee, 16x20 chromes shot from reproduction just seem absurd.

Maybe you could make a contact DUPE chrome if you wanted more than one. That would probably be the best quality repro method.

When I sold my 20x24 camera this year Robert, I sold it with a box of T-Max, a box of Provia and Yes a Partial box of Velvia, Fuji will make it for you if you want to pay the price and wait..

I think you may be able to get it less expensive now, but at the time I think I paid $1200 for 20 sheets of Velvia...

That is what they were used for, was large light box displays in a couple of airports here in the US....

Like you say, if you are willing to pay .... of course, if I had money I would be driving a Maybach and not a Honda.
