i'm starting to slightly regret buying a hasselblad 40mm that takes....104mm filters!. i can't find them online anywhere. by anywhere i mean that i doubt these filters even exist.
i'm wondering if anyone has some advice for some possible substitutes? i have some cokin p filters that kinda-sorta work (as long as i hold it perfectly right up against the glass and take 4 pictures). is there anything i can rig up that is not going to take away from the hasselblad quality? i found some no-name 105mm filters on ebay that i could easily hold infront of the lens, but would like to avoid anything that is going to reduce the quality of the photos. is it possible to rig something up or am i lost in the dark? i'm looking to get a red, yellow and orange filter. thanks in advance....jordan.

Call KEH, Calumet, B&H, Samys ... one of them will have it. If not it may be a special order. I know the filters exist, new and used, but it will take some searching.

I don't know that lens but any chance it takes rear filters?

40mm on 6x6 is basically fisheye country. Often those lenses take rear filters.

If you really need 104mm front filters then ask B&W or Heliopan.

Outside of that maybe some sort of hood with 6" gel filters?

there's nothing for the back filters. that would make my life a million times easier, but nothing is ever that easy. apparently it's better just to make 104mm filters than a 20mm filter on the back -go figure.
i might want to add here, nick, that this 40mm lens is huge. it's bigger than any medium format fisheye i've ever seen or just about the same size. the 6x6 fitlers will make sure my finger prints don't get in the way.

You could try getting a Cokin X-pro holder and universal adaptor which clamps onto the outside of the lens. I have limited experience of the X-pro linear polariser and 2 stop ND grad but they seem at least on par with the Hitec grad I used previously and way better than P series. If you prefer, I think Lee filters will make anything you want in the X-pro size (130mm)

My Nikkor 40/4 for the Bronica S2a presents the same problem. The filters are some oddball size like 100mm. I usually use 4" gels, but I do have one of the original Bronica filters for this lens--light yellow, which is not my most used filter. What were they thinking? I'm guessing that 105mm hadn't become quite standard yet.

I'd consider a custom step-up ring, but it would interfere with the slip-on lens shade (or require getting yet another lens shade for this lens, like a B+W wide rubber shade).

I was going to suggest a Lee gelatin filter holder, but it isn't big enough. They make a really neat one that is quite cheap - it holds single gelatin filters up to 4x4" and slips over the lens with a rubber band. Unfortunately, the window on the filter holder limits the size to about 85mm or so.

a Cokin Z Series MIGHT do the trick for you- it has a maximum size of 96mm adapter ring, so you MIGHT be able to get a 105-96 step-down ring, or have one made for you at a machinists.

A stepdown ring with that super wide lens would most likely vignette.

Kodak made some large gels 125mm square. I have several but they are cc filters.

There were also old odd sized aero lens filters but they are thick and uncoated. I have a 6" red filter thats about 1/4 to 1/2 in thick. Nothing that will thread right on that lens but maybe usable.

I have, and LOVE, a 40mm Distagon. The lens is pretty much pure magic for me. The only complaint I have ever had for it is the lack of filter options. Actually, at this point the only filter I REALLY REALLY want for it is a polarizer. Heliopan will make one, but I'm not going to drop $685 on a filter...that's a large chunk towards a superwide--and those take a "normal" filter size. The Bay 104 stuff does come up on eBay from time to time, but they usually go pretty high. I was able to find the front cover on eBay, as well as the leather case. Again, I have to say that this is a magical lens.

i should have been more specific. i'm mostly looking for a red, yellow, orange filter. not having a polarizer isn't that big of a problem, although i WOULD like one, most of my landscape shots are taken with a slight less wider lens, which i already have a polarizer for.

how would the gelatin filters hold up to something like say at 105mm thread filter in terms of quality? i'm using a cokin p series filter right now and i tape it to the edge of the lens (go ahead and laugh -it works!) but i just spent a lot of money switching from a bronica system to a hasselblad and would like to exploit the quality as much as i can and don't mind spending extra on a filter system that is going to last me a long time.
