Kodak's Metalic Paper

Kodak, at least in my area, is offering 2 rolls of their metalic paper for the price of 1 roll to Kodak wholesale customers.

Part one
You may wish to contact your dealer and see if he'll pass the savings on to you.
I'll check the details tomorrow, but I think it runs until the end of March.

Part two
For those who have used this paper what are your thoughts?
I have access to this deal, but have not used the paper. It looks like it might be a good match for what i shoot, but it is still a an investment.

What is metalic paper? Why does it come in rolls and not boxes like the paper I'm used to?

I'm ignorant about this (and other things too.)

The paper has a metalic shean. It comes in standard cut sheets but the special does not apply to the sheets. I have bought rolls before and hand slit them and also had the lab I do work at use there automatic sliter. The upside of a roll is that you can cut the paper for your format (in my case I need multiples of 6x6, 6x9 and 4x5). The down side is you have to cut the paper.

I printed 50 11x14s with it and decided it was a bit much for people pictures, in terms of effect. It is positioned by Kodak as a portrait and fine art paper, but seems contrasty and harsh, compared to a traditional color paper. it is only available in a glossy finish. Most people looking at my pictures didn't like the effect.

It does create an interesting effect with reflections and metallic objects in a photograph. Steel train rails and chrome bumpers have never looked more "real".

I now use Kodak Supra Endura as my standard color paper - excellent color and hopefully good archival characteristics.

I think you can buy a box of 50 8x10 for about $36. Try it out before committing to a larger purchase.

I will test some and depending on how things go split a couple rolls with the guy I'll be buying it through. This post, more than anything, was intended as an FYI for those who might be interested in the deal. A couple years ago Kodak had a similar offer for their Day/night and duraflex materials that I wished I'd known about. So I'm just kinda "paying it forward."
