A friend of mine has given me a 4x5 KB Canham camera and several (mostly Schneider) lenses to sell. We know nothing about large format cameras and I was wondering if anybody would be willing to let me know an approximate value of the camera. It appears to be in very good condition, as do the lenses.
Thankyou,
Dograt

A lot. All the 4x5's are over $2000. just guessing if its in good shape it should pull $1000 + on Ebay.

The lenses depend, but if you do a search on Ebay you would find some comparisons. Also checkout the price lists at KEH, midwest photo exchange and badger graphics.

Here is a link to the badger graphics canham pricelist.

Check ebay

If you go to Ebay and put the proper description in the search area and click on the completed items link you will see Ebay's History for the item.

His 4x5 is really a 5x7 camera with a 4x5 reducing back on it. Last spring I bought a 5x7 with a 4x5 reducing back for $1700. It was in mint, like-new condition and that represented probably a $800 to $1k discount considering the reducing back.

If the camera is in great shape, start the bidding at $1500. Don't put the lenses up with the camera - sell them seperately. A lot of people would want the camera alone and they would not want to pay more for lenses they don't even want.

If you want, you can post detailed close-up digital photos of the camera here and we can help validate the condition. In the eBay description, point them to:

http://www.canhamcameras.com/

for technical information on the camera.

That 5x7 is a great camera. Wonderfully sturdy for a wooden camera.

Thanks for the help

Thankyou very much for your advice.
Mike. it is a metal framed camera, there is no wood.
I looked on the KB Canham website and it looks like an MQC57: Attached is a picture of the actual camera.
I was thinking I might try to sell it on the classified section of this site.

Well, that makes a lot of difference. I'm still not used to the idea of his metal cameras. I don't have any personal experience with them nor have I heard from anyone who has. Maybe someone here owns one and can offer an opinion. It looks like it's in mint condition in the photo. You would save eBay fees if you sold it here, although people often make some contribution to APUG if they make a sale here, but it isn't mandatory.

You might give it a try here - any potential buyers are probably reading all this anyway. But, I would'nt take just any price for it - I'd want at least 70% of it's retail price.

What lenses do you have?

The Lenses

Here is a list of the Lenses I will be selling. All seem to be in great shape:
(I used * for degrees)
Schneider-Kreuznach Super Angulon 5.6/47 XL- 120* Multicoating
Schneider-Kreuznach Super Angulon 5.6/58 XL- 110* Multicoating
Schneider-Kreuznach Super Angulon 5.6/90 Multicoating
Schneider-Kreuznach Apo Symmar 5.6/180 Multicoating
Schneider-Kreuznach Super Symmar 4.5/80 XL-105* Aspheric MC
Schneider-Kreuznach Super Symmar 5.6/110 XL-105* Aspheric MC
Fujinon SWD 1:5.6/65
Fujinon C 1:12.5/450
There is also what seems to be a viewfinder that says Linhof Universalsucher
Technika and has adjustments from infinity to less than 2.

Would anyone care to let me have a little feedback on what I have here and what a fair price would be.

I also have dozens of filters.

I have a Canham DLC (4x5 metal). It is a great camera, my other large format cameras are a Speed Graphic and a Deardorff 8x10, but the Canham is by far my favorite of the 3. I'm not sure if I like the fresnel, it seems course when viewed under a loupe, but it is very bright. I got my Canham on ebay for about $1200 a couple of years ago so I'm not sure what the current price would be. It is solid and light weight and well worth what I paid.

Dograt-

Depending on the condition of the lenses, you basically have a gold mine there. Your best bet is to sell the camera and each of the lenses separately. These are all very nice lenses, but putting all of this together into one set and trying to sell it will lose you a lot of the potential money you could get. Also, that's an extremely complete set of lenses; most photographers don't need that many lenses and would shy away from buying the whole set for what it's really worth.

You can get a good idea of current pricing by checking out the completed auctions section on eBay. I think you'll find that all of this stuff, priced separately, gets into the "many thousands of dollars" range.

Unless, of course, you just want to get rid of it...in which case I'm sure you'll find countless volunteers here who would be more than happy to take the set off of your hands for free.

It looks like a DLC45 to me. The MQC57 is a 5x7 camera. The three shortest lenses won't come close to covering 5x7. So, the camera is most likely the 4x5 DLC model. Used DLCs seem to go for about $1500, or a bit more, on eBay - depending on condition.
