In Black & White Photography (UK) March edition there's an extract from this new book, the pages immediately after our great leader

John Blakemore is a superb photographer & printer and this book would be a useful and inspirational work for many on this forum. He's almost certainly the finest master of the craft of photography in the UK.

During the late 1980's I went on a couple of Workshops with John Blakemore and had the priveledge of seeing how he works. I'm sure if Les McLean sees this thread he'll endorse my saying how worthwhile it would be to read how John approaches photography and printing.

There's also a small discount for reader of Black & White Photography.

Thanks for the post Ian, as it happens I've seen the book and agree that it's an excellent book by the best teacher that I've ever worked with. For those in the UK who may be interested the book is being launched at Hoopers Gallery in London sometime in April, I'll post the exact date next week when I return from the latest round of workshops in the south. John will be there to sign books and usually openings and launches at Hoopers are good. If anyone would like to be there please PM me and I'll arrange it.

Looks like the discount is even bigger for customers of Amazon (£13.11)
I suppose the author gets his money no matter where you buy the book.

I will be interested in either ordering the book or hopefully buy it here if Borders in the US carries it. I have always enjoyed his work. Truly a gifted photographer and printer.

Hey Jim,
overstock.com has it for the cheapest price or you can order it from walmart .com, walmart says it should arrive by the 28th of this month. I think today is the official release date in the U.S.

Hi guys
I obtained my copy at the beginning of the month through my book club. I am only half way through but so far it has been excellent. John Blakemore works in what must be said are the more basic darkroom ways (no F stop Timers or analysers etc) but the mans vision is truly outstanding. This book, I feel, will make you think about your printing and maybe open your eyes and mind to the less obvious options.
I would highly recommend this book to any darkroom worker.
Regards
Steve

Ordered it a week or so ago from Amazon.co.uk. Been watching the alleged "usually dispatched within" date go down from "3-4 days" to "3 days", to its current "2-3 days"... Hopefully it will eventually reach "24 hours"...

Bob.

P.S. Just checked again (Weds 20th) and now "Usually dispatched within 3 - 5 WEEKS"!!! What's going on here???... My account still says it should be shipped and received in the next 3 days, so I live with some hope...

Hey guys,
sorry you have to wait! I got my copy here in the states yesterday and all I can say it will be worth the wait. If you have ever attended a workshop with John then this book will bring back memories, if you never have then this is the next best thing. I'm sure after reading this book your image making will be changed.

Well said Andy, I'd totally agree.

I'm actually now buying a second copy for my 19 year old niece who has decided to move up from 35mm colour snaps and digital, and started to work with LF and B&W. John's book is ideal for her and she can easily relate to his images and working practices. Once she's mastered the basics of processing & printing I'll encourage her to attend a workshop.

In the meanwhile I need to find her a 5x4 camera, any offers welcome

Hi guys,

I ordered mine a couple of months ago from Amazon US and am still waiting for it... :-(

It was cheap (19US$, that is less than 15 euro, hail cheap dollar, hail Mr Greenspan) but Amazon still keeps me in the dark concerning the time when the order will be dispatched...

Has anyone else recieved his/her copy from Amazon US ???

George,

Yes, mine came early last week with some others, 3-4 days after ordered. Unless there is something wrong with your order or it is shipping by boat, you should have it soon.

I ordered mine last week. Amazon have been a little funny about dispatching, but a quick email seems to have sorted them out and they're now saying it's been dispatched and should be with me on Monday.

The extract in B&WP UK was excellent (thanks Ailsa!) and on the basis of that and Les's recommendation I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on it!

I just got an Email saying that they dispatched my order... Now I just have to wait for the super-rapid (3 weeks) postal service to bring it home... :-( I've read - and heard so much about this book, I'm really curious to have a look at it...

Walked into the office this morning and it was sitting on my desk! Looks like the availability problems should be over... (fatal to say it I know!)

I received mine a few weeks ago. The book gives a more personal approach than the general "how-to" darkroom book. It explores John Blakemore's reasons and intentions as well as the "dodge this way, and burn that over there" kind of book. A bit of a cross between "Examples: The Making of 40 Photographs" and "The Print" in Adamsesque terms...
