My sister accidentally bought a hardening fixer rather than a non-hardening fixer from Adorama. Is the hardening fixer okay to use with Delta 100 and Ilford's RC paper?

sure. Most modern films don't need a hardner and toners work better with papers that have not been fix with a hardner.

Rumor has it that it's more difficult to clean film and paper when using a hardening fixer, thus a longer washing time is needed.

It's not recommended on FB papers, but you're OK there.

As a little sidenote: I use the Kodak Fixer with hardener. I use a small cap-full of the hardener added to a large quantity of water and agitate with film after having fixed and before using hypo. It's helpful in taming the curl and softness of foma film.

Concerning wash times, if you use the Ilford washing sequence for film (fill with water, agitate 5 times, dump, repeat with 10 agitations, repeat with 20 agitations), you shouldn't use hardening fixer. With hardening fixer, use a longer conventional wash procedure.

I would just use the hardening fixer for film and get non hardening fixer for the paper. Paper fixed with hardner seems to be more difficult to spot in my experience even when processed archivally.

Does the fix come with hardener in it, or do you mix it with the fixer?

Great question Marko.

If the hardener is in a separate container, you can choose whether or not to use it.
