How to remember the lens cap.

I traded some Nikon gear for a M4-P and then sold a bunch of slide film and bought a CV 35/2.5

An attack of GAS, but luckily I offloaded more than I gained and didn't spend any money.

The camera is nice, but I'm very aware I can shoot away with the lens cap in place.

This is to ask, how do you make sure that the cap is off: any tips?

I take photos of my lens cap all the time. It is really embarrassing.

I take photos with the lens cap sometimes. I wish I had any tips except to try to remember to take it off which is easier said than done!

One could fix some sort of protrusion to the cap that covers the viewfinder window.
But then one would furthermore have to design something that forces one to set up the cap in one certain orientation only...

I got in the habit of putting the lens cap in my pocket whenever I pulled my camera out of the carry bag. I only put it back on when I put my camera away.

One if the interesting photos of HCB in action shows him apparrently with a M leica and the type I summicron he used for a while but also seemingly palming a lens cap in left hand on a lanyard, i.e. if it is not in my left hand it is on the lens...

I lose caps infrequently but freqeuently take good photos of them as well, rfdrs with TTL meters must be useful.

I store the cameras in gbag when shooting with hood and filter, but at the start of the day i forget...

I went from a Brownie Hawkeye, to a Voightlander Vito IIb which was a folder to a Minolta SR-7. So I have been usings SLRs since 1966.

Recently, I bought a Hasselblad 903 SWC which is not a reflect camera. I promptly took half a roll of film of the back side of my lens cap. How did I solve my problem?

I took a strip of yellow gaffers take an placed it on the top of the lens hood as a reminder. I also put a strip of the yellow tape completely around the edge of the lens cap in case I did not have the lens hood on. Now when I look through the view finder, I see the yellow tape to remind me to take off the lens cap.

I did the tape trick but with some red reflective tape. I haven't taken a cap photo yet.

Why not put a good quality UV filter on it and dispence with the lens cap ? , that's what I do with my Contax, and if it gets scratched I buy another one.

I never use a lens cap but use a UV filter and hood for every lens I own.

I suggest that you take the cap off and put it in the bottom of a drawer, and use a crummy clear filter as a lens cap. That way if you forget, you still get a shot.

When I'm using my Leicas, I either have the lens cap on or the lens hood. If I see the hood, I shoot. If I don't, I know the lens cap is on, and I know I have to switch before shooting.

New 28mm f/2.8 Elmarit-M ASPH, and the new Summarit-M 50 f/2.5. My 50 yr-old Hektor 135mm f/4.5 and 25 year-old Tele Elmarit-M 90mm f/2.8. All take 39mm filters.

Particularly when your subject is the one to tell you. Doubly so when you were attempting a candid street type shot and a perfect stranger tells you.

All my M lenses have the correct Leica UVa filter, lens caps are stored in the original lens box and I NEVER use them. No problems.-Dick

i take off the lens cap when i take the camera out of the bag ..
either that or it falls off by itself ... i've forgotten a few times
but not enough to worry about ...

If I pick up the camera, the cap always goes right in my pocket, or the bag, whether or not I have a UV filter on the lens.

Lens shade....

One of my lenses has a good rigid lens shade & I don't even have a cap for it (I do, however, stop down to f/22 if I'm carrying the camera around in the sun to avoid curtain burns).

Another lens has a flexible lens shade which can only be extended once the cap is taken off.

My super-wides have no shades, but I suppose I've gotten so used to taking off any caps that it has become second nature.
(Though years ago I also photographed lots of caps...)

Take it off first thing before you start shooting. I know it's a DUH!, but it's not too hard to get into the habit of removing the thing first thing before you start shooting.
