Excerpt from an issue of the SPT Journal.

Fortunately, all the information we need for servicing and repairing our electromechanical SLRs is available on the web. Some of it is free, some of it is paid.

The first port of call for information is learncamerarepair.com (LCR)

Many issues of the SPT Journal are available exclusively there, without which we would be unable to do much.

The SPT Journal

was a series of specialist journals published periodically for professional US camera repairers and contains complete service/repair information on common electromechanical SLRs.

Many of the articles were written by Master Larry Lyells, who is undisputedly considered the most prolific and competent expert on the technology of these SLRs.

LCR also contains all issues of

The Camera Craftsman

from the 1950s to 1980.

The target audience was also professional camera repairers in the US. It contains detailed and comprehensive reports on cameras, photographic equipment, and industry news. It is also a historically interesting source on photographic technology.

LCR offers manufacturer repair manuals and the National Camera Training Course for self-study for camera repairers.

LCR has been subject to a fee for some time now.

The editions of the C & C Associated Troubleshooting Guide are indispensable for solving electronic problems in SLRs. Some of them can be found on the web or sometimes on eBay.

In addition, there is a lot of technical documentation on SLR repair available free of charge on the web and in the Internet archive.

www.repaircameras.org
is a platform for free downloads of repair manuals from different manufacturers.

The range of specialist books on camera repair is manageable. For an overview, see here.

PHOTRIO, photo.net, Reddit and the German APHOG also deal with repair topics.

LCR runs a group on Facebook for members only on this topic, which I am not familiar with.

Otherwise, there are numerous videos on camera repair topics, including shortcuts. I strongly recommend being critical here. Very few problems with SLRs can be solved easily, which is why we are offering this workshop.

⚠️ A word of caution

Please keep in mind that you’ll be using highly flammable solvents for service work, and their fumes are harmful to your health. Soldering also produces fumes that should not be inhaled. Dangerous high voltages can be present when handling electronics, especially in conjunction with electronic flash units and mains. Therefore, familiarize yourself with the safety regulations beforehand and ensure your safety. Depending on the activity, protective gear may be advisable.
