how to develop 5x7" sheets by NO JOBO EXPERT DRUM

Hello guys,

I'm new in the jobo system so I ask your precious help:

I bought a cpa2 processor with these tanks inckuded:
# JOBO Drum 2830
# JOBO Drum 2840
# JOBO 2560 (Extension)
# JOBO Tank 2523
# JOBO Tank 2553
# 1 extra JOBO Rollbock

The question is: can I develop with consistent results and ease 4x5" and 5x7" sheet films (say at least one or two at the time) using just these tanks?

I would try to avoid to buy also an expensive 3006 expert drum...

I have a thread on using the 2800 drums (search for my name and 2800). Bottom line is that some films will can get a line on the back but other films will be just fine. You can always fix and wash outside of the drum. The main advantage of the drum is all in the development stage. I have been doing 8x10 in a 2800 series for about 6 months and have had no problems. In fact I just picked up a second complete drum.


The best way for 4x5 is to get the reels for your 2500 tanks.

Be sure to use enough developer. I'm convinced many 'uneven' development problems can be eliminated by having plenty of developer concentrate in the drum. (not just enough volume, if you know what I mean)

With that setup you should be fine without the expert drum. Save you money for film and lenses

I do 4x5 and 5x7 in the 2500/2800 drums respectively.

Yes, it works fine doing up to 4 5x7 sheets in a 2840 drum. For 4x5, I think reels for the 2500 might be better.

So I'm thinking to use jobo Uni 2509n (in some 2500 tanks) for 4x5" sheets and the 2840 drum for 5x7" ones.
4x5": Using the uni 2509 how to keep the 6 sheets separate on the same reel??

5x7": Do I have to use the paper clips to avoid films floating in the 2840 drum?? I mean, how to put the 5x7" sheets inside the 2840 correctly?

Yes, it works fine doing up to 4 5x7 sheets in a 2840 drum. For 4x5, I think reels for the 2500 might be better.

JOBO do a sheet film loader for the 2509 reels, which is handy, but not really necessary. If you get a 2509n reel with the black clip-in diffusers, you should be able to do six sheets on a reel. If you get a 2509n without the diffuser (or a 2509 reel which is the earlier version), JOBO recommend only doing four sheets at a time for consistent results and preventing streaky development.

For the 5x7s. You can use the paper clips to keep them in place, though I have had no problems without the clips. I had one come loose once when processing film, marking the emulsion slightly, so I have tended to go without the clips. Though I do still use them for half-plate, the smaller film does not sit as firmly against the ribs of the drum.

2509 reels and the 2553 tank. It works for me. The 2553 also handles 35mm & 120/220 film. Great tank if you have enough reels for it.

2830 or 2840 (I have the 2840, but the 2830 should work also) for 5x7 and larger.

I have had problems with pyro developers and 2500 series tanks, even using the old Jobo insert holders. The stain builds unevenly on ribs or dots. No problems with Rodinal.
