I found that by sticking to one or two films I learned a great deal more about the entire process than I did when I jumped from film to film. I now use 2-3 films, each is for a specific situation. By changing one thing only I can truly understand what is going on, but by changing many things at once I cannot.

Delta 100 (35mm, 120, 4x5) Love this stuff.
Tri-X (same formats as above) Used it so long I know it well.
Pan-F plus (120, I'm new to this one)
APX 100 (120, until my freezer is emptied)
Kodak and Fuji 120 color negative film of which I shoot relatively little.

I BTZS-test all my films and papers so I have a choice depending on (1) what I have on hand and (2) the conditions I'm working under.

I use so many different BW films only because I "discovered" APX100 just weeks before it was discontinued and fell in love with it. After I use up my APX, I'll probably go to FP4+ and stay there.

I'm going to assume this means b/w AND color; K-25 & APX 25 (what's left of them),

APX 100 (also what's left)

APX 400, Tri-X, HP-5 (not all at the same time)

Portra 400 NC

Portra 160 NC

If you are going to ask a general question, you should create the thread in the Lounge - not everyone here shoots B&W.

I've been using T-max 400 for a few years now but have just started using Delta 100. Haven't souped any yet but I hope it's great. I plan to just shoot one film so I guess it will either be the Delta or T-max 400.

Only 8x10.

I standardize on one film in each format - T-Max 400 in 35mm, T-Max 400 in rollfilm, and (currently) Arista 400 in 4x5 (soon to be Efke 100).

Keep it siimple.

Tmax 100 or Kodak infrared, Provia or Velvia for slides. I still have a couple of rolls of Techpan saved for special occasions. For large format I like Delta100.

Pan F+ (35mm, MF)
FP4+ (35mm, MF, 4x5)
HP5+ (35mm, MF, 4x5)
Delta 3200 (35mm, MF)
SFX 200 (35mm)
Velvia 50 and 100 (35mm, MF)
NPH 400 (35mm, MF)

Also have a couple dozen rolls of APX 100 and 400, some J&C Pro 100 and some efke 100 left.

I seem to mostly be going for Pan F+ and FP4+ these days.

110 - Whatever I can find

126 - Ferrania, obviously

35mm
Black and White: Plus-X, Tmax 100, Tri-X and occasionally FP4+, HP5, or Delta 3200 when it is cheap or free.
Chrome: Kodachrome 64 and 200, though I will switch to E-200, Astia, or Velvia if time is an issue or, in the case of Velvia, I want the super saturation
C-41 - Usually Fuji of the appropriate speed, except Portra for shooting portraits

MF - same as 35mm, except no Kodachrome (obviously) and I slip in eastern european films from time to time, like Efke or Maco (I shoot 127 as well)

2x3 sheet - J&C 200 or 400
4x5 - Mostly J&C 200 or 400, now that I am almost out of APX100, plus Ilford Ortho, and Velvia
5x7 - FP4+ so far

I feel like a film whore.

Still 3 98% of the time
6cm, 4x5, 8x10 - I am so often dissapointed with 35mm enlargements, I only shoot it once in a very great while.

I am glad he didn't ask about comeras

Cut the kid some slack - this is not a bad question, I have seriously seen far worse here. I don't know why you got so defensive when he DID NOT ask what B&W FILM people are using - just what film. Perhaps a little more constructive responses would be better - he's very young, with all the enthusiasm and yes, the maturity that goes along with it. Alienating him without educating is really no more mature than some of his posts here.
Just my opinion, though - but I think everyone was 13 once. At least he has a hobby and aspirations, more than can be said for many his age.
Well, enough whining, back to the subject at hand.

I used to use a lot of APX100 and 400, before the formulation changes in the latter and the eventual demise of both.
I mainly used to use FP4+ and TriX. FP4+ is my main film, I really like it - TriX is suffering from my distaste towards Kodak and their recent "we're all about digital" attitude, but wow, in my humble opinion, the best all around B&W film ever made. So now I am trying to fall in love with HP5+, and having a rough go of it...
I always have a roll of PanF around just for that occasion that calls for it, and recently I tried Efke 100 and may be falling under its spell.
Generally, if I need a little more speed but want finer grain, I will reach for a roll of Delta or Acros for portraits (gorgeous in Rodinal), but that happens rarely. I have never managed to get satisfactory results from Delta 3200 or TMZ - I am sure its my fault, but I have had better luck pushing 400 films than trying to tame those. Perhaps one day...
Colour goes to grocery store 400 film for general shooting (which I do little of) and Velvia. I have been so dissatisfied with quality of prints I get that I don't think I will give colour much more thought until I have facilities to process it myself.

Peter.
