Help locating a Petzval of 4 ro 5 inches

I'd try all the usual suspects (Jim Galli, William Linne aka ineffablething, ebay). Also give Quality Camera in Georgia a call - they often have odd/unusual older lenses. I think you'll have a hard time finding a petzval in that focal length range though- they tend to run long for the format because the makers were trying to minimize the distorted areas, not play them up. They may well exist in that size, but I have rarely seen a Petzval at less than eight inches.

You might also try Jim at Midwest Photo. At their booth at the View Camera conference, I saw they had several old brass lenses/Petzvals. I picked up a list of lenses and can look at it when I get home, or you can just call them.

I would suggest a note to Adam Glover, a.k.a. C.P. Goerz, a.k.a. Dagor77, a.k.a. Dagorman over on eBay. He trades in these lenses and I've seen him offer shorter Petzvals recently so he might be sitting on a trove. Just don't ask him for a lens from Carl Zeiss.

Why not? He's likely to throw the lens at you, which is a cheap way of getting good glass.

OTOH, Zeiss didn't make many Petzvals.

and by the way - his name is Andrew Glover, not Adam

The Dallmeyer Patent Portrait lenses are Petzvals. They also made other designs like Rapid Rectilinears, Achromats, etc.

I think the 4" one you are after is a 2C but I don't have the old Anthony catalog handy at the moment. The 1A is a 10" 4x5 lens. The 2B is a 6" quarter-plate lens, and the 2D is a 9" half-plate lens. Then numbers and focal lengths increase in each of these series. The later Petzvals are listed in this 1931 Dallmeyer catalog under the soft-focus lens pages. Unfortunately, the C series isn't listed in this catalog. I'll look it up tomorrow if no one else responds.

IIRC, Dallmeyer also made a shorter Extra-Rapid Petzval listed as a medallion lens.

A black enameled lens would be one of the later examples.

Looks like the 2C is a 6" lens. This post on the Civil-War Reenactors Forum includes a picture of 2B and 3C lenses as well as an 1892 Dallmeyer "Extra" Quick Acting Portrait lens (series C) catalog page. The cutaway illustration shows the Dallmeyer variation of the Petzval design.

A magic lantern lens is what you're looking for, my friend. They don't have apertures (but it's easy enough to cut a slit and make them yourself), but I have found plenty of them in the focal range you are looking for.

any special instructions for cutting A slit in my magic lantern lens? i can not remove one of the elements. i think it is cross threaded. i was just thinking about doing this. i do not have a lens with water house stops to compare to or anything.

Sam, I have a nice old 3 1/2" Gundlach. It would vignette 6X7 I believe. It's about f2.3 so it's pretty wild out in the edges.

No. Very few, in fact. Among many other things, Dallmeyer invented telephotos. Or at least commercially popularized them.

Kodak Ektanon's are modern designs. The bigger ones for repro cameras are dialyt like RD Artar, and the smaller ones could be triplet or ?
