I'm not sure whether to classify myself as a hobbyist or an ameratuer. I have always been fond of taking photos, though I've primarily used point and shoot cameras. I finally got my first SLR, shot off a roll using all the auto functions, and have since put the camera in full manual mode.

As someone who is learning, I find it very discouraging to go to site after site and finding that so many people lean towards digital photography and encourage others to do so as well.

As a matter of fact, I recently stated that while out shooting some natures photos I was concerned that some may turn out blurry as I didn't have a tripod with me. One person responded that I could fix that problem by getting a digital camera. Half the enjoyment of using an SLR is controlling the outcome of the shots.

For me, there is a certain pride in taking the time, assessing the lighting, working to find the right compositon, and creating a good photo. I don't know that any of my photos are anything to get excited about, but I am sure I will improve over time and in the end the work will have been all mine.

I am grateful to find a site that is devoted to analog photography.

If you get the chance, go into someone's darkroom and watch a B&W print emerge while the paper is in the developer. When this happens you will really be hooked!

Welcome and good luck!

I've always wondered how Wisconsin can be considered mid-west. Looks kind of central to me. It's just below Ontario and we call them central. Well we actually call them lots of things, but geographically at least they are central. Naturally they think they are the center of the freaking universe, but that's another story.

Glad to see you've resisted the lure of lazy photography. Welcome to our patch of the universe and I hope to see some of your pics soon.

i think the term mid-west is an easterner's term (who clearly DOES live in the center of the universe) it's mid-way to the other coast where....oh i forget what those....those other states are called...are. ;-)

welcome to this forum. it's neat that you've resisted the digital tsunami...and not easy to do either. as stated above, find yourself a darkroom and watch the magic!! in no time at all you'll be working your way back to the nineteenth century by buying a view camera. hehe...

Welcome and have fun here.

BTW the Midwest is actually just West of the far Eastern USA. Next you have the Plains states, which are the true Midwest only they are not qualified to use that term since it has been taken by the states to the East. Next you have the Mountain states, No explanation needed for them. Then you come to where the best is, in the WEST! We Know what part of the country is really in the middle.

Now this is probably the best description I've seen! haha But people in Wisconsin tend to classify things by food or drink....East Coast=lobster; South=fried chicken & moonshine; midwest=cheese, hot dogs (or bratwurst if WI) and beer; plains=corn (hence the word 'plain'); mountains=coors beer; southwest=BBQ; and last, but certainly not least West Coast=tofu and wonderful wine  !

I suppose it's not really the midwest, just as there really isn't such a thing as Minnesota nice unless you're being sarcastic. But we do talk like they do in the movie Fargo.

Thank you for the welcome and the lively discussion on the "midwest".

I am SO pleased to hear this. It's one of my favourite films, and whenever I watch it I've had to question whether the accents are for real - I've always hoped that they are!

The accent isn't so heavy in the metro area - around Minneapolis, but you get into the out lying regions and you will definitely find people with the heavy accent. We are a strange lot of people here.
