Hi all,

I've been reading APUG forums for a long time but just recently subscribed and have never formally introduced myself.

I'm the wife of Kevin (KWMullet) whom you see posting to APUG all the time, and mom of Alec, 4 and Harper, 4 months. I've had a long time interest in photography since childhood, but didn't learn much in depth until I married Kevin and he showed me how it all works. Photography is a hobby for me - my day job is system engineer, although sometimes I help Kevin out as a second shooter when he photographs weddings.

For some reason I never have taken an interest in digital photography. Kevin (a very talented, experienced photog & printer) did briefly leap into digital, against my begging and loud pleas to stick with analog (his digital days are over, thank goodness  And this was way back when developing film and printing were brand new to me and before there was APUG.

I started out with 35mm autofocus, and a few years ago switched to manual focus 35mm, then to medium format, and now I'm just starting out with large format. We're just starting construction on our darkroom, so I develop film in tanks in the kitchen sink and either scan the negatives or print on POP paper. I'm in awe of the beautiful prints I'm seeing from the APUG community but I am really nervous about print exchanges. I have a print exchange coming due soon and I'm really worried about sending out my little 4x5 POP print, which I'm still working on (and working on, and working on). I don't want my exchange partners to be disappointed. Hopefullly they'll remember their learning process and what it's like to make their first prints.

I'm enjoying the reading the forums and I can't begin to tell you how much I've already learned in the short time I've been reading your posts!

Hey Dianna,

Welcome from Plano. I understand what you mean about printing - I have just recently begun to make my own prints and my respect for the other members here has really grown.

For me, it's wonderful to see Dianna on apug.

Dianna shoots more than I do, and nails the image she wants more than I do. Her comments above are way too modest. She's a much better shooter than I am, I've just been at it longer.

Nowadays, I'm barely printing any of my work, since I mostly eschew having my stuff printed either by someone else or digitally. Also, for us, since we've got a couple of young'uns, shooting (and once the darkroom's done, darkroom work) is a function of time management skills -- another area where Dianna outstrips me. Harvesting the odd minute or two out of the day to go shooting or squeeze out a print or process a roll of film is definitely a fine art.

All anyone needs to do is look at any of Dianna's images hanging on our walls or in her online collections and know that I definitely "married up". Her images are at once both humbling and motivating to me. It's very cool to be married to someone who not only 'gets it' about something so important to me but participates in it rather than just accommodating it.

One thing's for sure: her images create an insatiable hunger in me for my images to be better.

Kevin:

Wow! I have a similar situation. My wife is an artist. She considers herself an illustrator. She occasionally does photography (now, um .. digitally  ) for use in her illustrations. The point is, when she does use a camera, she "nails the image she wants more than I do". It has to be the practiced eye. Oh, well.

Dianna:

Welcome (again) to APUG. Soon, you and Kevin need to join our merry little band of North Texas apuggers so we can meet you. I met Kevin last year, but only that one time.

Cheers,

David

PS: any help I can give with that darkroom project, let me know.

Careful, David. I'm liable to fill you full of coffee and take-out from Yummy's and get you to help me sheetrock when the framing is done.

...the kind of wife every (photographing) man dreams of! A darkroom for two! That's great and welcome from New England.
