Buying a Hassy body.

Ok, so now I'm in the Hassy Swamp (god they put out many models...) and I'm a bit uncertain on the vignetting/fall-off with long lenses.

I want to use my Hassy with a longish portrait lens, say a 150 mm, and maybe with a extension tube for closeups, still lives, etc. Just how bad is the fall-off with a lens like that? Is it 1, 5 or 10 mms in the viewfinder? Is it a bit dim, quite dim or total cut-off? Real world input much appreciated.

I'm looking closely at the 501C-model which seems like a good choice for a first body in bang for buck terms. A later 500 C/M would be nice too. The 501CM has the Gliding Mirror System which supposedly eliminates this problem, but at a cost. Is the GMS really with it? I could put those 150-200 USD of a better lens or something.

Thanks!

Um... pardon the silly question but isn't the vignetting only an issue in the viewfinder? The film, once the old or new mirror system is out of the way, gets light all the way to the corners.

It only happens with older models like you mentioned, plus like NikoSperi says it might be evident on the viewfinder but not on the film.

Hasselblad mirror issue

Well I've been using a 501 C/M for many years now and my longest lens is only a 250 mm--it's a non-issue with the C/M's GMS. I also have a 503 CX (TTL flash) that I bought second hand and I assume is -pre-GMS but I have no viewing issues with the 250 mm on it either so I have NEVER had a viewing issue up to 250 mm and the longer lenses are supposedly the issue --Hopefully we'll see some other answers here as I'm curious myself as to other users replies !! One bit of advice--Get a GOOD body that has a GOOD BRIGHT (split-image highly recommended!) Focus Screen already installed so you can enjoy using the camera as opposed to hating it for being so hard to focus--it's all in the screen!! The modern Hasselblad Split Image Acute-Matte screen is terrific and I highly recommend them and then there's Bill Maxwell's Hi -Lux too--I don't suggest a grainy Beattie---too grainy for me!!

The vignetting with a 501c and a 150/4 attached is hardly, if at all noticeable. The vignetting intrudes from the top (1 side) only; about 1-2mm inward. And, the vignetting that you do see is gradual and just slightly dimmer than the rest of the ground glass. This assessment could even just be the imagination(that is how insignificant it is). This is with a waist level finder. No experience with the extension tubes.
