I bought an old premo #9 on ebay and this lens was in the box.

Goerz Dagor, f:6.8, series III, no.5, focus 10 3/4 inches.

It has an ilex shutter that needs repair. The appeture blades are loose and the shutter doesn't open completely. The lens glass is in very good shape.

Is it worth repairing? too big for 4x5? any info you can give me on this lens?

If the glass is good, it is worth repairing in my opinion. It should cover 11x14+ stopped down.

What kind of Ilex? Is it a Compur dial set-like Ilex General? Or an Acme or Universal? The Generals are notoriously bad actors regarded as unrepairable by SK Grimes. If it is, I'd seriously consider a transplant into something more usable (or even a barrel) If the Dagor's glass is decent, it would most likely be worth it. Check out SK Grimes' website for details.

Cheers!

I'm not sure of the model on the shutter.

It is about 4 inches in diameter. On top is a dial marked acme with the speeds 1-1/300 plus T and B. At 2 o'clock is the shutter cocking lever. 10 o'clock is shutter release. The bottom has the diaphram slider, 6.8 to 45. Two patent dates on the bottom 1914 and 1915.

oh, by the way the premo camera has the same lens in a 6 inch size. I think I paid $35 for the whole shebang. So fixing or replacing the shutter isn't such a big deal seeing I got it for almost nothing.

I don't know what a premo is, but it sounds like you got a deal to me.

$35 bucks. Ya done good. No matter the shutter. The 10 3/4" Dagor is a very desireable lens to the LF and ULF crowd. Even in the crummy shutter (yes, that is a really crummy shutter) it would probably fetch $275 - $325 on auction if the glass is decent.

Hi there,

Kevin, lucky you. By what you described the lens cells should be a direct screw-in fit into a newer Ilex Acme / Universal #4 shutter.

Have fun with it.

Ok. i found a picture of the shutter on the SK Grimes website. It is the "Dial Set" shutter and they use it as an example of a very poorly made shutter.

Guess I'll replace it instead of repairing.
