I just got me an Epson V600, and starting casually scanning B&W and some slides off a spare Windows machine, using a very plain-vanilla smallish monitor I had on hand.

I could treat myself to something bigger and probably more suited to the task, without going off to the deep end of the rabbit hole. I do not need high performance, just a decent middle-range monitor.

Recommendations, and maybe what to avoid - like a gamer-optimized machine?

I have that same scanner, using SilverFast 8 on a 2-year-old MacBook Pro. At 2400dpi, I can't tell any significant difference between viewing on the built-in Retina display and my LG 34UM95 34" ultrawide monitor (3440x1440) which is going on 5 years old, and in fact I like the color balance better on the LG. So for my $0.02 I don't think you need anything especially fancy, probably not worth the extra expense for 4K.

Maybe I should correct and not say GAS, but minimal specs I can get way with, instead. No point in buying tech i will not use, or benefit from.
All kinds of seasonal sales are already fired up, so there are affordable choices, it seems.

I know this is an old thread. I'm in the same boat 3 years later. What did you land on? There's a Viewsonic ( 27") that's highly recommended but $700. There's an Asus ProArt 27" that is also highly recommended and costs about $300 after tax and other crap.
On the other hand, there's the Apple studio display. ha ha.
