fyi- some datacenter problems

Hi guys, sorry about the recent issues. Basically 2 issues- 1) the datacenter our server is housed in is having some problems, from what I can tell they are having to power down servers a few times 2) i have a request in so that when our server reboots our forum time does not go out of sync. Problem 2 fix is being hindered by the datacenter problems. Our server was rebooted about 30minutes ago causing the time to go out again so I thought it best to lock the forum until the time got fixed. Currently we're back up 100%, will post updates as I get them. Thanks!

our original outage a few days ago was from a fibre cable, the other two (last night & today) were power issues in the rack. The host has reduced servers in the rack and we'll see how it goes.

hi guys, we had to reboot the server so the host could install some monitoring on the powersupply. The time should not have gone out after that but it did. It looks like we have a bad bios battery which means the correct time does not store when the server is rebooted. Fortunately only 5 or so posts got bad time stamps. Thanks

According to http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph?site=www.apug.org, APUG is running on a Linux box. If so, it should be trivial to get NTP up and running on the server, complete with a startup script that sets the clock whenever the system boots, even if the server's hardware clock is badly off. (If you don't know, NTP is a protocol and program to set a computer's clock from a network server.)

Sean... I'm still noticing some threads with posts out of order, or with the wrong time stamp. The thread titled "Do photographers charge way too much..." in the presentation and marketing area. Nze's post appears to be several hours into the future! And, I think the one about the APUG conference gallery show has a post out of order.

Hi Sean,

A bad bios battery would throw the clock out by quite a lot - it would usually stop the machine from booting without intervention as the CMOS checksum would be incorrect. Under Linux on PC's the CMOS clock and system time are not by default synchronised. You can change the system time but this won't adjust the CMOS time which means the next time you boot the time is wrong. It may be that the arguments being used are wrong as the usual 'hwclock' command (which writes or reads the CMOS clock) can either adjust for the timezone or not. This allows systems which dual boot Windoze to have their CMOS clock run in localtime yet still run in UTC under Linux with a timezone offset. The hwclock command should be run periodically to syncronise the two clocks - usually via a cron command. If you need a hand, shoot me a PM - I've been using Linux since v0.12 of the kernel when we installed from a boot floppy and a root floppy.

I have been trying to get on to the site since 4:30pm today and have at last succeeded some 5 and a half hours later. However it is operating painfully slowly. Much worse than I have ever seen it although last night was pretty bad.

I can't see any reference to an issue today. It may be me but I have had no problems with any other website in the last few hours. I eventually saw the site about an hour ago with the "back soon" notice which I thought might be 10-15 mins but was about an hour.

Can you cast any light?
