I wonder if it's legal to use the Defender name?

1920's developer tech from Kodak and Ilford? Really? What about X-Tol, DD-X and Ilfosol?

Is this just all the usual East European stuff repackaged and relabeled? The film is Fomapan (as they state), but are the papers and developers just Efke or Forte redone? It does appear that after selling the business they just started up the same thing again using different labels. If anyone has more info, it would be useful to all of us. I used some of their stuff in the past (pH neutral fix is quite good!) and liked dealing with them.

Anthony Giudice sold Fine Art Photo Supply to Photographer's Formulary for personal reasons.

According to Anthony, no non-compete agreement exists between him and Formulary, and he told me that he asked and received Formulary's permission to start a company selling what Defender sells.

Defender, according to Anthony, will sell only consumables. No equipment.

Photographer's Formulary, according to Anthony, is not happy. I have not spoken to anyone at Formulary for their perspective, so please understand that I'm giving only one side of the story, and I don't have the time to do full investigative reporting. Someone else is welcome to do so.

But Anthony wants it clear to all that Defender is not FAPS, nor will it become an equipment supplier, as FAPS, owned by Formulary, is.

This from a phone call he made to me 15 minutes ago. Anthony asked me to post this, since his APUG password doesn't work, in an attempt to clarify his position on the situation.

Defender

Bruce-so what's he hiding out from? The net catches up with you rather quickly.
He could certainly make a post here if he wanted to. The rest is......you know
Best, Peter

When I talked to Bud at formulary a couple of weeks ago, he indicated he was having the website worked on, but did not indicate one way or another on his satisfaction level with the purchase..

Defender is not Fine Art Photo Supply

I've just now gotten a way to respond to this - Sean just sent me a proper password, etc. I'm grateful to my customers and friends - especially Bruce Barlow - who posted some info here to clear this up. My goodness gracious sakes almighty!

Defender Photographic is not Fine Art Photo Supply, nor is it connected with Fine Art Photo Supply. They are 2 different companies. They sell different products. And -- I'd actually gotten mail from people who didn't think FAPS was in business any longer! They are. You can access them at www.fineartphotosupply.com.

Defender sells film, paper, chemicals, and will eventually sell some accessories. The accessories will be printed materials to help with the use of the aforementioned items. We will also offer a free monthly "Bulletin", which is a newsletter with product news and technical tips. That is what Defender is.

Fine Art Photo Supply sells different film, paper, and chemicals than Defender does. They also sell a complete line of equipment for photographers - view cameras, tripods, meters, darkroom equipment, books, the view camera bags, focusing cloths, print washers, etc. Are we competitors? I guess... the same way Kodak and IBM and Hewlett Packard are. And --- if there isn't enough business out there to support more than one specialty dealer, then this is all a moot point and we all better find another way to spend our time. I'll play the piano in clubs, and sell the rest of you lead sheets and CD's...

Photo Formulary also sells a complete line of raw chemicals - which Defender does not (except maybe plain hypo) and things like Pyro, and Ansco 130 developer, and all sorts of other toners and materials to do classic photographic stuff - brown prints, Platinum, etc. Defender doesn't sell anything like that.

Never was it my intention to mislead. Anyone who tries to be successful and be dishonest at the same time is dumb. Zig Ziglar said that.

I never at any time said that Defender was the same as FAPS, or suddenly had now become FAPS. The newsletter is now dubbed a "Bulletin" to help make that clear, in the event FAPS wants to continue with their newsletter. I hope my little posting here makes this clear, once and for all.

And listen guys -- maybe you should all be spending your time taking more pictures and spending less time on these forums.

And Pete - I'm not hiding. I just got a password to be able to post this. Gracious! Do the rest of you know Pete Schrager? -- good photographer. Buy a print.

You were doing fine till you decided to tell us how we should spend out time. So tell us, you very conveniently ignored Mr. Troop's post. Anything to say about his comments? Like you plagiarized his fixer formula?

Hmmm....seems it was removed. I have no idea why it was removed, it told a very good tale about Guidice and his attitude.

You know, you kind of had me until I came across this. It really is not appropriate for you to make a comment like this, you don't know me or many of the others here and you are in no position to make such a statement. Perhaps I should tell you that you should shoot more and spend less time coming up with breathless hyperbole about your products. A developer that allows one to imitate all the different classic films of yore, you ought to give us more credit that that. Next you will be telling us it is both a dessert topping and floor polish.

Thanks for that. Now I know where I won't be spending my money.

Anthony..

I do have to say, with a very active photography business here in the states as well as shipping around the world, I have learned, there are many ways to cut your own throat....I know I have made that mistake a couple of times..

But as one business man to another, you might want to actually read what you post before you post it, as telling people what to do, might not be your best course of action if you wish to actually sell any of those products you are offering.

Selling would be a perfect job if it were not for the damn customers!
