I have a Federal "suitcase" enlarger I'm looking to sell and need some advice. It's in great shape, everything works, has a 120 negative holder, red filter and disassembles and fits into it's case which is also the base for the enlarger. Anyone know how much something like this would be worth? I'd appreciate any info. Thanks.

Probably not much, but your best bet is to do some searches on the auction site to see what they have been selling for the last 6 months.

I tried that, but can't find the one I have. Need to try and find a model # I guess. None of the pictures have the "suitcase" like the one I have. So it could be a case of not much + odd duck equipment.

Holy crap...that might be perfect for me. Can you get 35mm negative carriers for the thing? I can't fit a regular enlarger in here...but that's something that I COULD use.

PM me with info when you get it. I may be very, very interested.

My Federal has long had 35mm carriers made from mat board. So you can eaily improvise.

Is it a good enlarger? Does it work like every other enlarger? Do you have to readjust it every time you use it?

I'm having problems right now because I'm in my grandparents' house and they tell me that I can't have an enlarger ATM because it would take up too much space to store. This would be a perfect solution! :D

Stephanie, I could loan you a briefcase 35mm enlarger that was working when I last tried it years ago. I keep the thing in case I ever need to print while on the road. It is a Russian scaled down version of the Federal.

it is probably not worth more than 25 dollars if that, on the market.

a lot of us old timers learned to print with federal enlargers, and we had one at the lab that was a favorite of many students. Simple to use.

Stephanine, it is very basic and works much the same way as anyother enlarger. Not sure i understand you question regarding readjustments. Every negative has to be readjusted for sharpness.
If you mean adjusting for image size, only if you can image size then you would need to move the condensor up or down and re focus as well.

I'll see if I can get this one first...the fact that it's a medium format would help me out a lot because I'm also shooting medium format now. I can always fashion a 35mm negative holder.

And ann, thanks. I wanted to make sure I understood what someone else was talking about when they said readjustments...I was puzzled. Now I'm not.

do you have an email where I can send you a picture of it. i'm in seattle, so if you wanted it (depending on where you are) shipping could be more then the thing is worth. it has a medium format holder. last time i fired it up it worked. probably needs a better light bulb in it then what's there now.

How heavy is it? Would shipping it ground cost a ton? If it wouldn't, I'd still be interested because it's about the only way I'm ever going to get the okay to have an enlarger anywhere in this house.

usually the heaviest part is the base, just remove it. it can be replace with 3/4 inch ply wood. a bit of sanding, stain, and your ready to mount the strut and start printing
