I've signed up for a Barnbaum workshop in October - we'll be heading down into Escalante Canyon for a full week of exploration and photography. I've spent a lot of time over the last few days looking at photos taken in the canyon - based on what I've seen, it should be an amazing trip!

Anyone else signed up for this workshop?

I am not signed up-they don't pay teachers enough to support a family and go to workshops. The swine.

But, you will love the escalante. Lot's to see and october will be beautiful with the changing leaves and water running from the end of the monsoons and the light is amazing that time of year.

when wet the escalante is a giant clay pit that will turn your shoes to bricks in an instant and make footing treacherous. Yes I speak from experience.

Ken to fit in more with the locals, you need to call the town of Escalante...escapoop! You'll love it over there. Take an extra pair of hiking shoes. There are times the one pair you might take will get soaked or crudded up. You have a spare pair that way until the first pair is dried or resurrected. Take some high protein small snacks like Jerky with you. Have two bottles for water. This sounds like extra weight, but in the end you will be very glad you took the time to lug it with you. It is dry, and no source of food around. That time of year dress in layers. The days can get warm, but the nights get very cold. Also lots of the usual sun block, hat, and sunglasses. Enjoy. When your done with that one and if it is late enough come join us afterwards at Zion. We will be heading over that way after doing the tour on the Navajo reservation.

I will be heading up there in just another week! I am very excited because I have never been anywhere in that area. I will also be going thru Zion NP and a few other places. I have seen photographs of the place and it seems beautiful! I wish I could afford the workshop also, but oh well.

Anyone else taking this workshop with Barnbaum in October? If so, let me know, and perhaps we can share travel arrangements.....

Mark you lucky guy,

Here they dont pay teachers enough to raise a family!

"They" are honestly considering a plan for subsidized housing for Las Vegas teachers! The ads on the county school vans read "Answer the Call to Teach" so we are I guess on the mission field answering the call and so enjoy it no pay is needed!

Las Vegas---Clark Co School district needs 2000 new teachers each year, but doesnt pay enough for them to afford housing, or families or workshops....

I guess we will have to teach our own workshops! Sorry about the rant but Mark just caught me right (28 years public school teacher 3 years private and 3 years college adjuct)

Hey Dave thanks for the warning. I was considering Las Vegas and will cross it off my list.

I have actually batted around the concept of creating a workshop series for us poor folks. As it is now, there is none out there except Per's free workshop.

I will be at Pers this December....I actually like Zion better in the winter.....maybe because it is 114 degrees at the time I am typing this post...! Your Cortez sunset picture looks pretty cool right now.

Hi Ken,
I am the other guy signed up for this right now. I spoke with Bruce a few days ago and there is some possibility that it may not take place..Evan Clarke

For those that want to be at an exciting workshop this would be one of the best to attend. That time of year in the Grand Stair Case National monument area is breath taking. The temps will not go above 70. They will have Llamas I hear for your gear. Bruce is arguably one of the best workshop teachers around. It would be a shame if people are sitting on the fence about this workshop, and see it canceled. It is well worth the money.

Yes, Bruce's workshops are great. He traditionally has a daily print evaluation between AM and PM shooting which is inspirational at the least. At this Escalante outing, you are out in the wilderness 24/6 and it is serious shooting with no people, cellphones, wires etc. I really hope some others sign up..Evan

Well, let me revive this thread from the archives. Bruce is again offering an Escalante workshop, this time at the end of May, 2007. I'm signed up for it.

Anyone else?

I'll have to see if Bruce would just let me drop in to see people one of the days. That area is what is in my backyard photographically. I know locals over that way who cn take me places off the beaten track. Besides who wouldn't want to go to beautiful Esacapoop as we locals call it.
