I purchased the first edition of Dead Link Removed today from the princely sum of $2.50. I thought that it was quite impressive for a first cut and look forward to properly reading the mag.

Its also available on eBay

Has anyone else had a look? If so what are your opinions

Phil,

If you would be so kind, what exactly was it that you found "...quite impressive..."? I'd love to support it but don't see much from the website to convince me to part with extremely limited funds.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not a great fan of e-zines and prefer the paper in my hand but I thought this issue, which is the first, was thoughtfully laid out and flowed well. I read the text along with the images (unusual for me) in the galleries and found it to be reasonably informative and photo related, not the artist statements that I have come to despise. There are some interesting articles for the beginner including one on cyanotypes which I am just starting to dable in, plus potentially good interviews (I havent read them yet) and the mag wasn't crawling with adverts. Again a personal viewpoint but there is some interesting Pinhole articles which made we want to make my own. That can only be good.
Of course there are ads but they are mostly tasteful (pers opinion) and relate to the LF world.

Dont get me wrong, this is by far not the 'best' mag I have seen but I though that it laid down some interesting groundings for future issues. My point was for a first issue (and probably done on a very slim budget) it was worth the $2.50

Phil,

Thanks for the quick reply; I truly appreciate it. It may be hard to understand, but life has recently dealt me a situation where even $2.50 becomes an expense of which the benefits must be weighed. Unfortunately, "...thoughtfully laid out..." and "...reasonably informative..." doesn't do it for me. I can appreciate their "...very slim budget..." more than most can appreciate. I appreciate your bringing this publication to my attention none-the-less. If/when my situation improves, I will check it out. Thanks.

Jorge, did you receive your code yet? How long did it take for those of you who did this?

It took about 25 minutes for me from the time I did the Paypal until they sent the code. The PDF does not load normally in my browser, however, so I've had to write back and ask what the problem is with it. It looks fine, but in miniature with the normal Acrobat controls missing....

It looks to me like the code is sent when they get the Paypal notice, so I would assume that you can only get a code during their waking hours. Cheers, Richard

Jorge, the article on the Contact Printers Guild has two of the images I made at the Convento de la Santa Cruz in Querétaro when I visited you this spring. I'll be forever grateful to you for taking me there. What a wonderful place!

Interesting that the eBay price (2.00 GBP, which is approximately US$3.55 right now) is significantly more than the website price (US$2.50). I mention this only because I found the price discrepancy interesting. Do UK subscribers who go through the web site also pay so much more?

Now I'm waiting for my code too...thanks for the information Phill.

Got the code and I'm impressed. The images are traditional LF material including many alt process prints. The articles such as the one on cyanotypes appear very helpful. Hope this Journal proves successful.

Hitting the escape key when the file has loaded should open it up in the normal acrobat viewer.

It's now well into their workday and still no code. Maybe the flood of APUG buyers overwhelmed them! (hey Sean, if true time to hit them up to sponser!)

Thanks for that John...I was down to using the keyboard shortcuts that I could remember...thankfully I remembered how to zoom or I'd have been lost. My eyesight isn't good enough to read the Journal at full page size on the 17" LCD that I currently use.

I liked the Journal, and with them good luck. Hopefully future editions will be as good as this one. There's a good, wide-ranging selection of images, the cyanotype article was helpful for me and will probably push me to try the process, and in general I found the writing and content to be extremely good. Hopefully future lens articles will have more depth to them, but otherwise I was extremely pleased.

Thanks again to Phill for pointing the Journal out to us.

Thanks from me as well, John. That did the trick... I got an email from one of the people involved saying that the other was unavailable until tonight. I assume they mean 'tonight' in the UK. So, those waiting should get your code before too much longer. Cheers, Richard

I've now had time to glance at it briefly (if it was a hard copy I would have read it at length by now..), and I can say that I definitely enjoyed many if not most of the images as I skimmed them, especially some of the collodions. Very pleasant surprise, really. But I havent had the desire to stare at it on my computer screen in depth, Did I mention that I really wish it was a printed newsletter? It looks much more interesting to me than that other one has in several years. I would gladly pay more to see it in print. Did I mentioned that yet? Hint hint.

I have also had a look and I agree completely with Wayne. in addition to the great images, I also apreciated how down-to-earth the artist's statements were, and the unassuming style of the magazine in general. I admire, for example, the inclusion of critiques of work submitted by regular Joes, and I absolutely loved the portfolio of fine landscapes shot using a $2 camera. In the same spirit, I noticed that, though it has roughly the same total number of pages, the Large Format Journal has fewer than half (I counted 8) as many pages devoted to ads as the other magazine (which has about 21 FULL pages of ads on average). Clearly this is a publication that is more interested in the large format community than in the bottom line. I hope that this journal picks up a large following, that it makes it into a print edition, and that it's spirit does not change.

I should add the one thing I do not like. It allows digital. Is nowhere safe, except the (digital) planet APUG? I might have to retract my other statements now, having noticed that. the pictures were good and I enjoyed them, but I'm not going to rush to support them if they could decay into digital without warning.

I agree Wayne, but as long as I can buy one issue at a time for $2.50 I feel safe and will continue buying for now.

I believe the low ad count probably has to do with the method of distribution. Electronic distribution is worlds cheaper than printed distribution, and there's no distributor or store taking their cut of the profits. So no need for nearly the percentage of ads. (The downside for me is that I love having ads with good information in them. Kentmere's ad - and they only seem to have one - leaves me high and dry. But ads with equipment pricing or with new equipment specifications aren't so bad.)

Be well.
Dave

p.s. Will you be building a $2 camera? I'm pretty sure I will!
