Does Ilford sell boxes of 5 rolls of 120 film? I was in the film store yesterday and I wanted to pick up some film along with developing chemicals. The Kodak Tri-X is sold in boxes of 5 rolls to a box, while the Ilford films are sold single boxes. I wanted 20 rolls of HP5, but I didnt want to deal with 20 individual boxes so as usual, I bought 4 boxes of Kodak. I keep wanting to try Ilford film but since I need to always buy a lot of film at a time, I buy the bulk boxes.

I've never seen any large boxes of Ilford film so I'm wondering if they even exist. If not, that's a poor move by Ilford.

Dear Mr.Rattymouse....

There is method in our madness....

We used to......make pro packs of 5 x 120 films : Then we ended up with inventory imbalances or worse inventory inbalances in distributors, but of more significance, as usage of 120 film dropped end user resellers would not be willing to stock two ranges of each type of film, singles and pro-packs especially since we make 8 different 120 film types so that was a major issue, and believe it or not most purchases of film are in single's or two's, so it was singles for us and still is, also all our 120 films are shrink wrapped in tens's so people can buy those.

In addition some resellers split pro packs, we do not like the thought of unboxed film, especially 120 film.

In 35mm our PP50 ( Pro-Pack 50 films ) still exist to reduce packaging for hign volume users in FP4+ and HP5+ 24's and 36's.

Sorry we cannot help you in this instance.

Doesn't Ilford come wrapped in 10's?
Usually when I buy 10 or 20 or more they are still wrapped in plastic not individual boxes.
Maybe the store you buy from can give you they unwrapped 10's instead of individual boxes off the shelf.
Of course as soon as you unwrap the 10 pack they all become individual boxes.
Maybe you can use the empty pro pack boxes from Kodak to store your Ilford film.

Yes I was in a camera shop yesterday and watched a reseller split an expired pro pack into singles - I cannot visualise how any one can live with 16, 12 or 8 shots, but they seem to.

You could ask the store clerk to put the film in a bag for you. Where I live plastic bags grow on trees.

Our milk used to come in glass bottles that appeared on doorsteps, as kids we collected the aluminium caps for scrap to fund charitys.
You put the empty bottles on the doorstep and they were replaced by full ones, the milk delivery vehicles were horse drawn.
Now days we eat them.
The horsies by product used to vanish pretty quickly and be dug into gardens.
The bottles had a typical life of ten refills.
Hope someone knows where planet B is.

That's a good idea. I only see open boxes up front, but somewhere they must have bulk, plastic packages somewhere. I'll ask next time.

I understand Simon. As a few have posted here, Ilford ships the individual boxes in 10 box plastic packages. That's good enough for me. I'll see if I can pick up a few next time.

Where I live you pay for your plastic bags. In China, you buy your plastic bags, they are rarely, if ever free. Regardless, I still dont want to carry 20 or more individual boxes.

It's a bit of a 1st-World-Problem, though, really ... isn't it?

When I purchase 120 film, as in yesterday, I remove the rolls from their original boxes. You would be surprised at how much space you'll save in your camera bag by not hauling around all those little cardboard boxes. Plus it's one less step to deal with when it comes to loading and unloading the camera. And exposed rolls are easily to identify. They're the rolls that have had their foil wrappers opened.

If you really wanted a box of five Ilford rolls, could you not just take each of the Ilford films out of their individual boxes and then put them into any five-pack 120 box?

I keep a couple of old, empty boxes of 120 around for carrying loose film myself.

 You're kidding, right? To you, Tri-x and HP5 are indistinguishable in all properties and cost except for packaging?

Yes apart from dev times there is

tabular 400 ISO mono
non tabular 400 ISO mono
C41 400 ISO mono

the tabular needs more care fixing when you dev in a multi tank - rodinal 1:100 stand 60 mins @ 20C

cept on a sunny day when I might need to know which 400 ISO film is in the camera for zone 1 metering eg If im using PET film - but we don't get many sunny days.

In the local pharmacy they are all 6.99 GBP for x36 35mm but the only Kodak is BW400CN, Ilford has XP2 and HP5 kinda 'Hobsons choice'?

No other speeds or any 120 if you run out on Sunday unless you are near to a Lomo shop... they have eclectic choice but not that cheap.

If a shop has a lotta cheap expired I buy it.

In my 35mm gbag now there is

2xHP5 factory cassette
2xBW400CN factory cassette
5xAPX400s from bulk surveillance reel dull days
4xDouble-x from cine reel (250ISO) bright days
