Does anyone know anything about this lens? It is a Commercial Komura 210mm (picture in tech. gallery) It looks like it is singel coated, with 4 elements. I haven't been abel to find any specs on it. I have been using it as a light weight 210mm on 4x5 with nice results, but the other day I popped it on my 8x10 and it looks like it covers the whole ground glass with some movements. I shot a couple of test sheets with it but haven't had a chance to develop them yet--probably this weekend since I can only develop 8x10 at night in my semi-dim room/garage
Can someone tell me the image circle, and if it is a tesser type lens or something else. Thanks.

If it covers 8x10 I don't think it can be a tesser. Can it? Lets say the image circle is 350mm then that's an angle of coverage equal to 80degrees.

I did a search and the only real info I could find was they seem prone to separation and it might be a graphic arts lens. I found a picture of a 400mm version and it looked like a barrel lens somebody had mounted. Well it did to me.

They tried testing a 90mm version and it was separting.

OTOH it seems the people that used them mostly liked them.

BTW since you're holding the lens you're in the best postion to tell us the image circle-))

I believe that this is the lens that Jim Gali advertised for sale on Ebay. If it is, then it supposedly was reviewed by Gordon Hutchings (according to Jim) in View Camera Magazine some months ago. Supposedly blazingly sharp and covers (as you indicated) 8X10.

Thanks for the information.
Aggie, that would be great, I would love to see the article.
I have always been impressed with this little lens. It always does what I ask it to do and more.
I believe that the image circle is at least 340mm since it is bright corner to corner wide open (the very corners of my ground glass are nipped off)
I will keep you posted on how my test shots came out.

I actually have one of these lenses and it is very sharp and I too believe it to be a graphic arts lens. I never tried it on 8x10 that I remember byut used it a lot on 4x and 5x. My lens suffers from separations as mentioned above. I use the Copal #1 for a G- Claron I bought in the barrel.

My optical manual says it covers 5x7 and the filter size is 46mm and the shutter is a Copal. No other information given. As thats wide angle it probably doesn't have much movement for 5x7. On a 4x5 it ought to be great for movements.

I tried it with 8x10 yesterday on a trail near my house. It doesn't have huge movements at infinity, but has some. At closer up it has quite a bit of movement.
I will post a couple of scans once my film is dry.

Hello, I believe that the lens you have there is an earlier version of the Computar Symmetrogon. They made the f/6.3 lens for general photography on the 4x5 and 5x7 cameras. It may just barely cover 8x10, but not by much and the corners may not be any good. They also made a graphic arts lens that is an f/9.0 lens in the 210mm focal length and it will more than cover 8x10 at infinity and maybe even 11x14. They seem to be good lenses.
