Discussion on Round 6

Hi Y'all,

I feel Camera 4 coming home. Art is going to be getting this camera in a couple of weeks, or maybe a month seeing as Ole is once again wandering like a lost divining rod in the oil fields of Norway...

We have had a number of interesting ideas for "Let's all Shoot 1 Camera". Infrared film, old camera shooting 6x9, homemade cameras, even one restricted to RB67 users. We have also had a strong request for a return to the disposable color film camera from George.

So here is the discussion, open to all interested, all that have been involved before, all period:

I am in favor of going back for round 6 to the disposable camera. We probably don't need a Pagan Chicken, squab, nor Christmas tree recipe angle for this camera but how about a single point of subject for camera round 6?

I foresee (I be the foreseer) 2 to 2.5 cameras a year for general circulation. I think we might do a couple specials every year such as the rb67 back project, the HIE project, perhaps a Zeiss Ikon Nettar project...

And of course, all members involved are open for their own project launching. I will help with any organization for these projects. I will take responsibility for the general cameras tracking and developing.

So... Ideas? Concepts for Round 6 visual subject? Good idea?

How about a Polaroid? Though that would commit every 10th person or so to buy a pack of film.

I like the ideas of an RB67 back project and the HIE project, too. A project that includes a camera like the Nettar is smart because it folds up so nicely for shipping.

A Polaroid project, as suggested by bdial, sounds good, too. We could include an extra film pack or two with the camera so that 20 or 30 people could participate. Actually, this camera could travel until there's no film available while every tenth person could mail in a completed pack of ten prints and this way we could see results while the Polaroid travels the world. Kinda like Voyager I and II traveling around the solar system and sending in pics as it goes along. People can sign up as the project continues on and on. We could use a cheapie Polaroid or a nicer one for durability as the miles could really pile up.

Other than that, I'm willing to shoot with whatever camera shows up at my doorstep.

Oops, forgot to comment on that, but I like your idea a lot!

Perhaps all who have submitted pagan chicken recipes could photograph themselves with their dish. Just kidding. Lets really not do that.

The possibilities are endless on this one. I'll bet you already have ideas in mind.

Yeah, but there should be a supply of film for a little while yet. Right?

I also like the idea of using again a disposable camera.
I think having certain requirements for the shot would make the next round a lot more fun.
How about this time we required the shot to be taken at specific camera angles? Like low angle, high angle or tilted...
Or how about having restrictions like no straight lines within the frame?

Only Sile would be eligible for participation on both lists. (We need to prove the assertion that multiple cameras congregate at that particular spot on earth)

Having two cameras going might take care of the 'too many dang people showing up' problem.

Is this "Let's All Shoot 1 Camera" function something that could give APUG publicity by having an article written about it in either newspapers and/or photo magazines? I'm not a writer or anything, it's just a thought.

The local Walmart is clearing out their AF point and shoot 35mm Vivitar and Konica/Minolta and Fuji and Olympus 35mm cameras for $30.00 or $40.00 each. Each of them has a built in flash, and would probably take great photos for most people.

The only problem is that if I went to buy one, I'd probably start to cry.

We did this with round 5. EBay is a great source of barely used Cannon SureShots. All different zooms, flash (or not), auto focus. All around 10 bucks including postage sometimes. We can do this again if the feedback is positive from participants of the round 5 LAS1C crew.

I got the feeling people like the primitiveness of the point and shoot cardboard boxes, but that does eliminate HIE.

i think something very inexpensive would be the best move.
sometimes the cameras are missing in action, and it would be a shame
to lose a nice camera to such a sad fate.

as for subject matter ...
how about front stoop ... and anything goes ...

I have to admit with them both staring at me, I automatically went for the Canon and took it a little more seriously and spent a little longer thinking about the photo I was going to take. The throwaway box ended up on a night out in the pub.. (long story involving pagan chickens and Guinness...) so although there were pluses and minuses to both camera's, my personal choice would be the Sureshot..

As for subject matter.. I do agree it would be very interesting to see a similar subject matter and the varied geographical take on it.. a hybrid of the Monthly shooting assignment and the travelling camera might be what we're looking for?

When people throw a few ideas at you Tim, why don't you add a poll to the thread? That way you can gauge the level of interest and preferences.

I'm in general agreement with Sile that the SureShot route does make for a bit more "seriousness" and, of course, offers greater flexibility.

Truth be told, though, I was a bit intimidated by it - given all the buttons etc. and my unfamiliarity with that particular piece of gear. Perhaps the time pressure to "move it on" contributed to my apprehension?

Anyway, this is a long way of saying that if you go the SureShot route - a manual or at least a "cheat sheet" would be a helpful addition to the shipping package.

Oh, and I really do like the idea of a single theme. I'd suggest a relatively simple one to start (e.g. my home etc.) but later on things like "no straight lines" could be quite interesting.

Anyway, my dos centavos.

Freestyle advertises a single use B&W camera from Rollei called the "Rollei Retro 400 B&W Assignment Camera". I could not find it on their website, but it is on page 35 of their most recent catalog. Sounds like a cut above standard disposables, and it is 24 exposures. Might be interesting enough for one of the Round 6 cameras; it lists for $9.99.

The ad professes a "high quality lens". Has anyone tried this camera? It may be better than a $10 off ebay Canon cheapie. I'm headed to Freestyle this Saturday and I can check it out.

Well, when a throwaway camera gets you an invite for a pint of Guinness and an evening of interesting conversation with an Irish photographer with obvious command of intelligent thought....

cardboard box here we come.

I suspect over the next couple of weeks a poll or two will arise.

Then we could use just about any camera, there would be some leeway for "mistakes", and it would be each participant's own choise of film - but also each participant's responsibility to develop and print the film...

We would have to decide in advance whether to use a 135 or 120 camera, since not everyone can print both sizes.

I might offer up a Voigtländer Perkeo for something like this.

Like the idea, but I think this loses the spirit of the project. I know we are calling it "one camera", but all of us having shots on one roll of film is the thing that makes this endeavor special, I think.

Let's wait to see how blurred the focusing was after a drink or two before we make any decisions... If it's fuzzy.. don't blame the cardboard box!!

I did mean to take a photo of the two camera's together, but somehow never got around to it, the convergence theory that "multiple cameras congregate at a particular spot on earth" is an interesting one, and leads me to wonder if I shouldn't make some e bay purchases to test it out...

On a serious note, I really like the idea of a central theme, my stoop, my house etc.. We could also have.. "Monday morning" or "Saturday night fever" or something along those lines. Everyone has a Monday morning and we each interpret it quite differently I'm sure!
