I had the distinct pleasure of spending a couple of days with him when I was invited to demonstrate a method I developed for hand coating fixed-out baryta (fibre based) paper at a workshop in Scotsdale a few years back. The workshop was a lot of fun but the best part of the whole trip was seeing his 12 x20 prints with my own eyes. It was truly a revelation.

I have a number of his books. They are all terrific. I am sure this latest tome will be great!

I strongly suggest you purchase the book directly from Dick. It turns out that many of these small production books are not very profitable, and I have heard from at least one artist that they actually loose money selling through Amazon due to their negotiated prices.

If you email Dick, he will sign the book, and get it to you quickly (once they are available). It'll probably be about the same price that you can get it through the chains, but the profit will be going where it belongs; to the author/photographer.

Thanks Michael for an excellent suggestion. My friend Jason Osipa's animation book STOP STARING experienced a similar fate at the hands of Amazon... a terrific book and a must-have within its genre, yet not particularly a money-maker. Get the money to the person who needs it for this wonderful book they have made. I'm quite keen on this one.

I ordered my copy directly from Dick last week. According to his daughter in-law, Dick is still in Turkey so I assume I'll receive it after the first of the year.

I'm particularly interested in reading Stan Klimek's section on custom printing but I'm sure everyones contribution in this revision will be worth waiting for.

My understanding is that this edition will have some chapters written by guest experts in addition to Dick’s wonderful knowledge. An example will be a chapter on digitally enlarging negatives for contact printing written by Bob Herbst. www.bobherbst.com

Bob teaches an excellent platinum printing course that I took last August. Dick’s first edition was suggested reading for that course. Bob also teaches a course on digitally enlarging negatives at the local community college. I bought a larger camera, 8x10 up from 4x5. Bob shoots a 12x20.

Hey everyone, I have the book and it is great. I've read about half so far and it's well laid out and has excellent examples. It makes me want to start palladium printing NOW! If only it were that easy. Unfortunatly I didn't see Michaels suggestion until today. I would have loved a signed copy and to see Dick Arentz get his fair share. Speaking of Michael M. I'm glad to see he has a cameo in the book. Anyway any questions feel free to ask. This book is worth every penny.

So they decided to include that tidbit on how to clear black spots? It's a doozie because it results in the production of chlorene gas, so you have to be very careful with the mixtures, but it works wonderfully to eliminate a black fleck or two from a print.

I don't know how many prints I could have saved if I had figured out that procedure earlier.

Well you will save a lot of prints for all of the newcomers and probably some old timers too.

Anyone who is thinking about getting the book but just isn't sure. I recommend it. It's an excellent reference.

Got my copy from Dick yesterday. The first chapter I read was Stan Klimek's chapter in the Appendix.

Michael's discovery was announced by Dana Sullivan on the Bostick & Sullivan Web Board last year, I'm glad he got due credit in Dick's book.

Being able to look at fine palladium prints at APIS ('01 and '03) was a real treat. Getting to look at Michael's work (as well as many others) was a lot of fun. I'll probably miss this year's APIS (sob) but I would reccomend to anyone that is interested in ALT printing to try and attend. You won't be disappointed.

Let me say to be complete on the information that I initally got the idea to try the approach from a somewhat oblique statement in Dick Sullivan's pt/pd book about bleach and HCl. He mentions lightening prints that have been overexposed.

I called B+S and asked if anyone had really tried this approach, and they told me that it hadn't really been done to their knowledge, so I worked up a basic procedure for it using two bottles of solutions.

So I can't claim credit for the origin of the idea, but I did put a few things together to come up with a good technique to eliminate the pesky pt/pd spots that sometimes occur.

As for APIS, I also recommend that anyone interested try to go. Where else can you meet some of the best alternative printers in the world? There's so much to learn from a group like that, regardless of your skill level. It is an inspiring collection of people and prints, to be sure.

Alternative Photography International Symposium

It will be held July 7-9 in Santa Fe, NM. Bostick and Sullivan is the contact point for information, but they currently dont have information on their website.

It has recently been held in England and the US every other year. This year, it's the US's turn.

It is also at the same time as the Photo Arts Santa Fe, so there are all kinds of gallery shows, and other events going on, including a trade show, and many special happenings.

I'm going to try to be there this year if I can swing the schedule.
