I recently purchased a CONTAX IIIA which is in need of repair. Specifically, it is the shutter in need of service. A local camera store here in Denver quoted me $195 plus parts. Can anyone recommend a good repair shop in the US? I'd like to get some recommendations from the APUG community and additional quotes before committing one way or another.

I have used Kelly Camera Repair in Mesa, AZ for years, due to the fact they have the ability to manufacture just about any part needed.

You could try your luck with Oleg Khalyavin of http://okvintagecamera.com/ - he is more than good and experienced with Leica, Sovkam RFs like FED, Zenit and the Kievs derived from Contax II, perhaps he is able to fix your Contax III.

If it is the ribbons and minor "unspecific stuff", he should be able to do it for less than 100USD incl. postage in both directions.

And there is a fella in the UK, Steve Ash, working on Contax and Kievs.

He has a "check list" - wether it is worth the try or not.

Henry Scherer is the very best. My Contax IIIa now functions perfectly. But he does more than a simple "CLA." He pretty much completely disassembles the camera, cleans everything ultrasonicly, and reassembles the camera over a period of one week. You might find cheaper service, but you will not find better. I dare say you won't even find anyone else his equal. He's also very honest and open.
