I'm going to be in Cambridge, UK over new year and would like to order some film so that it's waiting for me when I get there, so I only have to bring it one way on the plane.

I would like to buy T-Max 100, 400 and maybe some Tri-X.

Where do you recommend I order my film?

PS: Does anybody know whether the security staff at Stansted will let you have your film visually inspected? I will have it in my hand-luggage.

Regards

Francis

No they won't. They will also tell you that ASA3200 film is safe going through the scanners even if it says "do not x-ray" on the box.

If you are shooting 120 or sheet, stick the exposed rolls in your pocket. That said, had a whole stack of FP4+ go through the machines last month - No visable damage after processing.

Try Mathers who are usually as cheap as anywhere and in my experience give very speedy and reliable delivery. No online ordering but they'll accept phone, fax and email as well as good ole' snail mail.

Thanks!

I only shoot 36mm, so if I fill my pockets with film cannisters I'll be in trouble as they will set off the metal detector .

Do a search of the following sites: AgPhotographic; Mathers of Lancashire;7dayshop; Keyphoto; Mailshots; Silverprint and even the U.K. e-bay to see the best prices. I take it you have a U.K. address to which the film can be sent. Check the postage charges as well. Silverprint has a minimum order of £25 and Mathers stuff can only be ordered by phone. Some sites need longer than others to deliver. 7dayshop based in the Channel Islands have good prices but take longer to deliver.

I have an address to send to - several in fact .

Thanks a LOT for the list of shops to search. I'll check this w/e, but am not in any great hurry as I won't be travelling before the 30th of December.

I'm not worried about a minimum order, as I'll be ordering between 20 and 50 rolls as film is somewhat cheaper in England than it is in Norway.

EDIT: Do I have to pay VAT if I order from 7dayshop, or are the prices shown on the page the total cost?

Regards

If you want to order stuff over the internet Silverprint (APUG Sponsor - http://www.silverprint.co.uk/Catalogue.asp?PrGrp=224) & AG Photographic (http://www.ag-photographic.co.uk/kodak-black-and-white-film-10-c.asp) are probably your best bets

As for hand searching of film - I doubt it - but you might just be very lucky.

Normally film is OK through an X-Ray machine, so unless you annoy them or they are feeling in a sour mood, the machine is usually turned down far enough to not cause problems.

Of course they can turn the machines power all the up and fry everything in sight - but it isn't very often that it happens

I put film in a lead-lined bag when flying and have never had a problem with x-ray machines, though usually the operator wants to look at what appears on his screen to be a large black blob. On the most recent occasion the operator looked at the bag and said "x-ray proof eh? Well, it works, we couldn't see what was inside!"

The price quoted is the price you pay

It also included postage

If the value of the package is less than ?? pounds then no VAT is paid - so thats how they do it, break up any large order into smaller bundles and ship in multiple parts.

I have to wait between 5 and 10 days to get the goods using normal service - not so good if you are desperate but fine if you are ordering well ahead of time

Its cheaper for me to pay GB VAT as Norwegian VAT is 25% + a customs fee of obout £10-20.
