I think there's something to be said for that. My cousin is a very good photographer, and when he started out in photography he right away claimed that it was better to use expensive film, because that made him more careful with the whole process from exposure to developed film - just not to waste film, and you guessed it, money...
I am certainly guilty of trying to find cheap film, and I have made some really odd decisions lately, purchasing 30-50 year old sheet film on eBay to experiment with, so I'm not so sure I'm the best suited to advise on this
I'll have to say though, cheap isn't necessarily bad. I've seen some awesome work done with the J&C Pro 100 film, which is the cheapest fresh film out there (that I'm aware of).
