Chart Throb tames Kodak Dye Sub !

I recently took delivery of a Kodak Dye Sub printer,
ran a couple prints, and made a note to schedule some serious calibration time.

Then, I remembered that Kevin Bjorke's Chart Throb still existed in Photoshop ( which had smoothed the way a year ago to some fine platinum work )

It made short work of the necessary density profile for the new printer.

I want to be sure that Kevin is commended in a very public way for sharing his PS script ! THANKS !!!

Thats great news Don. Do you have an image you can share? Which dye sub printer is it? Years ago I used to get alot of stuff printed on a Forcaster (forecaster?) and the output was very nice, but very spendy.

I picked up a Kodak 1400 from a fellow who couldn't remember to clean the feed rollers and gave up on it. Too bad ! Anyhow, I hoped to be able to print 'contact sheets' from digital files en route to becoming palladium prints. (That, and, of course, to make pictures for the family scrapbook, and for friends).

The result is very C print, with massive D max, and fine, rich colors that give dainty wispy highlights, and fine shadows. Kind of like the Pyro/Azo Ideal, in color. I just can't get the image to look very appealing on a computer display, but here it is. (And, yeah, the prints ARE kind of spendy, but gang printing takes the sting out ! ) I ought to add here that this is just a good way for ME to get what I need: I'm hopeless with ink prints, and this is pretty much a no distraction, push button solution.

The picture is a split second before the sun came up in the Baddeck River Valley on Cape Breton Island. I finally bought a little digicam to keep in my jacket pocket just in case I EVER saw something like this.

Great shot! I loved the output I used to get from the fourkaster(sp?).

As for the images not cutting it on screen...
If I were to guess I'd say that you are using Adobe98 or similar 'wide gamut' profile. For screen only -- emailing to friends, posting on the web -- you may wish to switch to sRGB and using the wide gamut profile for output. Browsers have a tough time with wide gamut profiles and have no issue with the narrower sRGB.


One of us owes the other an email, in lieu of that things are fine here in BC and hope all is well in Dearborn/CBI.

Thats incredible news Don. Do you have a picture you can impart? Which color sub printer would it say it is? Quite a while back I used to get alot of stuff printed on a Forcaster (forecaster?) and the yield was extremely pleasant, however exceptionally spendy.
