One of my sons sent me a link of pictures that were taken for the FSA in the thirty's and forties I thought other member might like to see Dead Link Removed

Something has been lost in the time between now and then. Most of those pictured are not poor. It's just a simpler lifestyle than we're familiar with. Rampant consumerism and debt do not equate wealth only the choice to live outside your means. There is no shame in being poor.

Those are some wonderful images.

Not to belabor the point but back then there was no real middle class as today. These people in these pictures are very much lower middle (as we define it today) and lower class.

I was born in 1951 and even at that, these people look poor. Most people of that time didn't live much past their sixties, if that. The hard work took its toll.

As for shame, I never brought it up and these people look proud.

Looking at these images and images I see of the same period in Britain makes me sad, and think how true it is that " The past is another country"

Indeed...and all this time later, people are still starving and homeless in this country.
