Canon EOS 300V spot exposure button

Is it me or is the canon eos spot exposure button a pain in *rse ?

YOu can target a grey card or some part of scene, press the spot exposure button and then recompose and take your picture. However, you have to options, either hold the button down while taking and composing the shot or pressing it once and then composing and taking within four secs.

Now for me, four seconds isnt enough to compose the shot, and keeping the button pressed while recomposing is a real problem as you only have one hand free to move the camera around on the tripod and fastening all the dials and knobs of it.

Do all cameras work this way, or is it just the canons that do it ? Is there a camera out there that lets you press the spot button and then take your time ?

If you're taking that much time (rightly) to set up a shot why not just switch to manual and set the reading you got from the spot metering on the camera. When you're done just switch it back to your auto mode.

Yeah, done that a few times, its just that i feel a bit cheated really. I was wondering if it was just the canons or whether thats how spot buttons worked in general.

You may want to check and see if your camera has any custom functions. I have a Maxxum 7 and there is a custom feature you can set that will enable you to lock the exposure when you press the a certain button. You are then free to recompose the shot w/o any time restraint.
