Can I use the same brush Richeson brush for both Pt/Pd and New Cyanotype?

Hi all,

Was wondering if I can use the same brush for these two processes (and if I were to start other processes - can I use the same brush for all)? Or do I need to buy one brush for each process. Thanks!

one big huge resounding NO

you are more than likely to cross contaminate the metals in the processes. Itll will reak havoc on the prints.
Ive found I can use the same brush for Cyanotypes and Van Dykes without a big problem.

But get a seperate brush dedicated for pt/pd printing and nothing else.

Thanks scootermm. I've been given a brush which looks to have been used for Gum Bichromate... would I be able to use it for any other processes (as I don't do Gum)?

Guru, Id be hesitant to use the same brush for any combination of processes.
I do Gum Bichromate over pt/pd and use seperate brushes.
brushes may be somewhat pricey... maybe $30 or so a pop. may add up but when you take into account the (unlimited??) lifespan of the brushes, the amount of $$ in chems etc, buying a seperate brush for each process, even "nice" brushes, is well worth the investment.
only my two cents worth.

Guess I'll just put that brush to the side for another day. I bought a Hake brush today (local art supply store didn't have any Richeson 9010). I don't remember the manufacturer (Heinz something or other), but it was priced similarly to the Richeson's.

Take it back before you use it (that is if it cost the same as the magic brush.) A hake isn't comparable to a Richeson 9010.

I use the same brushes for coating kallitype and Pt/Pd. Just wash the brush thorougly after each coating and you should have no problem. Both of these processes use ferric oxalate as the light sensitizer and the addition of trace amounts of silver will have no negative effect on a Pt./Pd. print, nor will trace amounts of palladium or platinum negatively impact kallitype.
