Maybe this post should be in the How-to section, but anyway I start it here.

For those of you in Japan, especially if you're in living in middle-of-nowhere (maybe I'm the only one...), I'm just posting this to be your future reference for your purchasing. In Japan, there's a big corporate chain photo store called "Camera-No-Kitamura", which is like Ritz Camera in the U.S., kind of cheesy, but I've found this store in my area to be the most reliable source of getting the stuff I need for printing. Try one in your area if you think it helps.

You can get almost of all Kodak, Fuji, and Ilford products, since these products are in their store catalogue, and you don't have to pay for the shipping like you normally do (if you do). And the prices there are competitive with the ones from other stores such as Yodobashi and Bic Camera. If you're using Fuji paper both FB and RC, no matter where you go, it's almost the same price anyway. At Kitamura, it only takes less than a week to get it once you place your order.

One of the issues I had before was getting a new bottle of selenium toner because it's highly toxic and poisonous and in this country requires my ID to buy it, so I couldn't get it from some place else by shipping. And it's in the liquid form so that means there's no luck to get it from international sellers like B&H (I haven't checked, though).

In Tokyo, Ginichi sells it, but for me to get there just for that is a pain, and I have to pay for my transportation, which is over 20,000 yen or roughly about 200 USD for a round trip by bullet train. Or I have to pay about the same amount for driving highway for the highway toll. Not desirable. Osaka is closer, but when I called a couple of stores there they didn't even want to tell me if they sell it or not.

The closest store I thought I could go and buy was Top Camera in Nagoya. I had bought one bottle there before, which I'm still using, but they have changed their policy and you have to order a dozen at the ninimum now. But the Kitamura in my area, which is only 30 minutes away by driving has got me two bottles of selenium toner pretty quickly with no hustle. After doing all the research and getting frustrated so often, in the end I was like, what the f---! But I don't think anyone would guess that kind of store would carry such an item.

The point I'm trying to make is, try your local store(s) one more time. You never know what you can get this time. And by doing that, you will be helping the local business(es) in your area, too, which is a woderful thing.

Hello firecracker!

I have a question for you.
I'm receiving rumours that the Oriental begin to produce papers again! Do you know anything about it? If it's right than do they produce those in Japan or elswhere? I know in the end they had been using other plants to manufacture.

I think they called this to a New Oriental but it could be a rumour or just somebody somewhere try to waken it up.

I don't know anything about the new stuff other than the current lineup. But I know that Oriental USA has and sells more products; the warmtone FB paper is not available in Japan anymore, but in the U.S. it still is.

I don't know anything about the European market. Is there a divison of Oriental there, too?

So, my guess is that there may be a new product coming up, but that doesn't mean every market will have it.

I heard that the paper that's available in Japan, their manufacturing plant is in China now. Also, compared to the older stock, which I don't know too much about, the contrast that the current FB paper produces is much higher. I have used the current VC FB paper for a little while, and I tend to think the overall quality looks about the same as the current stock of Ilford neutral MC FB paper, but a little colder with very visible blue cast.

Hi Firecracker,

I live in the Inaka, but I am not very far from a Yodobashi Camera, so they can get everything I want. National Photo in Harajuku will ship Selenium Toner anywhere in the country. Also they dont need an ID to purchase it.

Sadly my local Kitamura is not very good, nor very helpful. I find it easier to use Yodobashi.

Regards.

I see. You're in Niigata, right? That's not far from Tokyo as you said. I'm in Mie pref, and maybe I just don't have a luck all the time.

But about the ID stuff, really? Is the National Photo the only place that does that without asking an ID? Ginichi, however, gets a little tough on the phone when selling selenium to the customers including myself, so I thought that was it. Also, when I did a web search, I saw some comments on the ID requirement and no shipping, etc, so I was very convinced that there's no way to get it from a remote place.

But since the Kitamura near me does everything for me now, so I don't really have a reason to order stuff in Tokyo or any place far. But it's funny when I went there and found some Kodak pjoto chemcals, I asked the store clerk about Dektol, Selectol Soft, and more importantly Rapid Selenium Toner, he that should be okay. But about the selenium toner it was a bit hard to explain because he had no knowledged about it, but I told him exactly what I was told in other stores. And he double-checked it, and there's no problem at all.

For Ilford products, they carry MC developer, Hypam Fixer, and Wash Aid for sure. And the paper, too, they can get pretty much anything that's in the country.

I thought that store was domestic brands (Fuji, Konica-Minolta, etc) only sort of a place by its look, but it really is not.
