Auckland this weekend

I'm on my way to Auckland tomorrow to shoot some 5x12's late afternoon and Sunday morning. If anyone wants to meet up give me a shout, I'll be shooting around the city. I may bring along a Roundshot as well.

No problem guys.........this came up out of the blue......I bought some darkroom gear in Hamilton and since I'm travelling that far I thought I may as well go to Auckland and do some shooting. I have 2 panoramas to do that I've shot previously but with different equipment. This time with bigger film and a selection of lenses I should nail it.......well hopefully!

Got back from Auckland late last night......had to watch the rugby at 5am so it was a long day.

How come it rains every time I go to Auckland?

I was lucky to get some breaks in the weather and got the 2 shots I wanted. Shot quite a few sheets of 5x12 and I set one film holder up to take 12" x 70mm strips which worked great.

This afternoon I'll start processing the film, first chance to try out my new 3004 expert drum.

Finally got around to scanning the negs.........you Auckland guys will know these shots well and probably shot them before. My angle on it is trying to get as much detail on the neg as I can then printing metre long panoramas.

They are shot on 70mm strips loaded into 5x12 holders, I also shot lots of 5x12 film but at this stage wont use them. The difference is in the emulsions I used, Forte 400 and Efke 100. I prefer the larger grain of the Forte. Developer is Pyrocat HD.

Lens is a 210 W Fuji.

Sorry about the picture orientation, this is a common problem with displaying panoramas on the web. You'll see from the section enlargement there is reasonable detail, the building sign is 4 kms from the camera.

The one with water and boats in the foreground is from Mt Victoria in Devonport, the city buildings are 4 km from that position. The other shot is from Mt Eden which is close to the city and is always full of tourists and their digi cams. The 2 shots took 4 hours to complete, the weather way constantly changing with rain coming and going.

For the first time (for me) I had the 5x12 setup at Devonport and someone came along and asked me if it was a Hasselblad........I felt quite privileged to be asked that question as I was beginning to think it was a myth!

The 2 photos I shot the previous year with different equipment and the results were quite disappointing. That led to the purchase of the 5x12 which I'm now happy to say worked out just fine.

I used to live in the old fire station just around the corner of Mt Victoria (more like a hill in size) - Mt Eden has potentially seen the most amount of digital cameras as any part of New Zealand - nice to see some big film get its way up there again

Each mountain can be seen in the other shot ... heh - I guess Iamb somewhere in there too (;

Nick makes a good point, once you get on top of one of the hills you can see the others.........there's 40+ extinct volcanos in the Auckland area and they all have great views. Most of them have easy access to the top which is why you find busloads of tourists and digicams up there. Mt Eden is close to the city, has views in every direction and the volcano cone interior is quite spectacular.

No I'm not that mean........I explained it was quite a bit bigger than a blad and much the same as the original cameras from a century and a half ago.
