I am going to Reno, NV in a couple weeks for my annual teck to their Italian Festival (I'm a 1/2 breed ). I'm looking for something to do during the day to slow down my losses (no comment). Does anyone have any suggestions for places to shoot in or around Reno?

An hour's drive to Bodie...

Actually the new art museum looks like it might be worth a gander.

And the casinos are always a great place for people shooting, if you can keep a step ahead of the superstitious security guards.

When are the camel races in Virginia City? I thought it was around this time of year?

Small world.....

I just drove down the the Seattle area to Carson City, where I am now. I drove thru Reno this morning. I think the environs of Virginia City might be worth looking around, but main street is a total tourist trap. There is some interesting architecture around town, though. Oliver Gagliana used to have his worksops in the area so maybe some APUGers who took the workshop might have some ideas.

Did someone mention you're an hour away from Bodie;>) I'm even CLOSER!!
Actually, I've been there a few times and I end up shooting abstracts and details of the great wood grain in the buildings there.

How much time do you have? Not much further south to Lone Pine, Alabama Hills and Death Valley. I'm going to D.V for sure on the lookout for rock abstracts. Had enough of the dunes, I think.

My friend here is a photographer, too, and I'll ask him about Reno and try to pose again tonight.

Have fun!

Pyramid Lake, just north.

Oliver had workshops outside of town at one of the old mines. When I was in Virginia city last, I asked about it and people asked why I'd want to go out there. At the time, folks indicated there were 'bad people' out there and it was no place to go safely. I don't know of the truth to any of this.

Fort Churchill just off Hwy 50 heading east of Reno is a suggestion.
It is an old Army fort with ruins there.
Pyramid Lake is east of Reno, too.
Mono Lake is at least 3 hours south of there and I highly recommend it.
Have fun!

If you're willing to go as far as Pyramid Lake, why not the Black Rock Desert (site of Burning Man)? An eerie landscape for certain. Look for Gerlach, Nevada on the map. For some photos of the area, visit www.keisterphoto.com. He hosts a bizzare golf tournament in the area in June and has created some fun images as well as some beautiful landscapes.
