Hello all,

Quick question: which side is the emulsion side on APHS film? Both the lighter side and the darker side appear to have the same sheen under my safelight. With no notch code, I'm lost. I Googled it, but got contradictory results. Some say it's the darker side, some say it's the lighter side. Thanks!

Use your sense of touch. The slick side is the base side; the smooth satiny side is the emulsion. And yes I agree, its difficult to tell under a red safelight.

Thanks guys. Given the odds you'd think I could have guessed correctly, but as luck would have it, I choose the dark side (no pun intended).

I found it strange that the film was cut just slightly too large to fit into my 4x5 film holders. I've never had that problem with other films before. Luckily the safelight viewing allowed me to trim a bit off one side with scissors. It's a little tedious though.

Yep, it's the lighter side, and Freestyle offers it both ways for 4X5. A true 4X5 which is obviously what you bought, and a film holder size 3 7/8 X 4 7/8 or whatever it is so you don't have to trim it to fit. (there was a url link here which no longer exists) the dev. formula that I spent 6 years developing. It's worth looking into.

Jim,

Sorry to hear that you spent six years designing your brew. W2D2 will work just fine though, IME.

Tried 'em all. That's mostly what used up 6 years. The Rodinal with the restrainers worked best of any for me. YMMV of course.
