Recently I saw an old plate camera at my local antique dealer. It had a compur shutter in which was mounted a Goerz Pantar 240mm. The glass appeared very clear and the shutter appeared to work.

I've done some searching but was unable to find out anything about the image circle for this lens. Does anyone know anything about this lens - will it cover 8x10 ?

The camera was going cheap - just thought it may be worth buying for the lens if it works on 8x10.

Any info appreciated.

Thanks,

Niall

Dear Niall,
you are lucky, Pantar is a convertible Goerz lens, rare in Compur shutter.
Pantar is a 4+4 glass symmetrical anastigmat with single cells fully usable at f12,5/16, you will have three focal lenghts. It has 80+ degrees of coverage so on 8x10 format you have some movements, single cells will cover easy.
The Pantar cells are better corrected than the single Dagor cells and complete the coma correction is better than the DoppelAnastigmatGoerzakaDagor.
Check the shutter if it has the single cells apertures, make an investigation if it works and the if the price will worth buy the complete camera.
Hope this helps.
