I just mixed up some Ansco 130. The last few batches I did, my Glycin from Formulary was in a black bag and it was cream colored. This made (I think) my Ansco 130 that brown color.

I just made some with new Glycin from Formulary but this Glycin was white. My Ansco 130 is now clear. Is this okay?

I should think so. It probably means your new Glycin is fresher... The first batch of 130 I made was with fresh glycin and it was almost clear. The batch I made up 1/2 an hour ago with 6 week old glycin is brown (but a quick and dirty activity tests shows it is apparently OK).

From my reading, Glycin goes off within a few months. Not sure at what point it becomes unusable but I have also read that it actually lasts longer in the stock solution...

Cheers, Bob.

I printed last night with Ansco 130 that the stock was mixed Oct. 04. While I still have stock I used an already mixed 1-1 delution that has been sitting probably since Feb. 05 and had been used before. Both stock and the deluted mix have a yellow color and, supprise, it printed great. I was making comparisons between LPD and Dektol, just playing around, and decided to see how the old 130 printed. I'm still supprised this morning of the lasting power of 130.

.

Clear? Yah, this is what mine looks like. I'm surprised since even basic Dektol has a hue to it. Too early to print now, I'll have to see tonight.

Glycin is highly resistant to oxidation. While nice white glycin is aesthetically,
feel free to mix it up when it is black. 130 will work just fine when it is black.

I'm glad to hear this as I have too much brown glycin. But I seem to remember getting stained highlights last time I used some. Maybe I did something wrong. It developed fine though.

Glycin is resistant to oxidation IN SOLUTION. If your glycin powder is dark it is probably bad. If your glycin solution is dark and less than 6-12 months old its fine. It always turns dark after a while in solution. I have used Ansco 130 stock up to 2 years old

I bought glycine from PF a little more than a year ago. I kept it in the bottle, in the light-proof bag it was packed in, inside my freezer. The glycine is slightly darker than it was when new, but I just mixed a new batch of 130, and it works fine. It appears from this one experiment that freezing glycine powder may preserve it.

As always, I'd love to hear more from you folks with an actual background in chemistry.
