I’m having a solo exhibit next month and encourage those of you who can make it to attend the opening reception. I’ll be exhibiting 30 photographs at the Weyers-Sampson Gallery, Thiel College in Greenville, PA. This is about an hour from Pittsburgh or Cleveland. A wonderful space, I’ll be exhibiting new work, all made in the last 3 years - most of it Azo contact prints. Details are below.

Scott Killian – 30 Photographs
Sept 14 – Oct 7
Reception: Sept 14, 2005 7 – 9 pm
Weyers-Sampson Gallery
Thiel College
75 College Avenue, Greenville, PA 16124 (724) 589-2095

I’m also exhibiting 2 prints at the Trumbull Art Gallery’s 41st annual group exhibition in Warren, OH which ends on August 28th.

If you have a moment, please visit my Website at www.scottkillian.com for more details.

In the meantime, I look forward to meeting some folks from APUG!

As Mike said:

"Congrats Scott, and good luck."

It is refreshing to see someone who is "Happening". The debate of an APUG stamp of approval or certificate of authenticity seems so trivial next to your work. The work merits exhibition. I hope you sell them all and have to make more.

Congratulations Scott. I'll do my best to get to the exhibit...it's only an hour from me.

Will you have the contact print of PPG Place on display? I've been working in that complex for the last six years, and have yet to get a picture of it on 8x10. I really like the photograph of it on your web site, and would like the chance to see it in person.

Best of luck.

Thanks, everyone. Really appreciate the support! Mongo - yes, the PPG Place print will be there. As you probably know from working there, that place is a real bugger to make photographs due to the security that hovers around. They toss out anybody with a camera in the courtyard area and with an 8x10, I stand out like a sore thumb. The reflections in all those glass panels are just too amazing to pass up so I simply worked from a side street with a 30" lens and the bellows cranked out to capacity. I encourage you to make the trip!

Scott-

I'll be there. Maybe not for the reception, but I'll definately make it to see the exhibit. (My girlfriend's moving house, so our schedules are up in the air right now. I will definately try to make the reception.)

As to security at PPG...I have an advantage in that I've befriended the security guards. I'm working on getting permission to do some photography in the area some Sunday morning...I think I'll actually manage to pull it off. Too many good images to pass up, and the best I've got so far is 6x7.

(By the way, I also love the reflection of the parking garage in the Red Cross building...very nice indeed!)

Be well.

Mongo,

Thanks for the compliments. Any idea why they make such a big deal there about photography? Seems like bad PR for PPG to hassle every tourist that wanders through there. That courtyard is really pretty amazing. I've had a lot of luck driving to the top floor of parking garages in downtown Pittsburgh on Sunday mornings and working with the 8x10 from up high. This is how the Red Cross photograph was made and a few others. Security has walked past, but has never hassled me. You get an interesting perspective from being up high and looking down on things.

Hope you can make the reception!

Cheers,
Scott

PPG hasn't owned the buildings since 1994, when they sold the whole complex to a real estate investment company. Unfortunately, the agency that was hired by the new owners to handle security for the complex is photographer-unfriendly. There's an art school with a photography program about three blocks away...you can imagine that the guards have had plenty of practice chasing off photographers. Since 9/11, things have only gotten worse.

The don't have any problem with taking pictures of the fountain or the "monument" in the courtyard...just the buildings themselves. Rise and shift movements might be of some use in this situation...
