Yesterday I dropped in at Rochester Photographic (rochesterphotographic.com) to speak with them about their services and get a price list, as their website is undergoing revision and isn't fully developed yet.

What I found was that they carry Agfa APX 100 and 400 in 35mm. I asked about supply and I was told that so far they haven't had any problem getting shipments from their wholesaler (based in NYC), and sales are strong. So it's not as if they have a big stock that isn't moving.

The person I spoke with shoots APX 400 when she does weddings, and prefers it to other B&W film, though she does like Tri-X as well. (But she didn't have much else good to say about Kodak!)

I don't know if they will sell via mail order, and there isn't any e-commerce section on their website, at least yet. If they won't do mailorder but you want to purchase, I can do so and ship at cost, prepaid by Paypal (no credit card fund source), and I'll ship via UPS or FedEx so there's no USPS x-ray zapping. Please call the store for pricing, as film prices are not in the catalogue.

They process b&w film in many sizes, including obsolete formats such as 127, 126, 828, 620. (I have prices on darkroom services.)

I have no affiliation and have NOT used their services, so I am not endorsing them yet. It appears that it's an all-woman operation, which is refreshing for some reason. ;-)

PM me if you have any questions or interest in having me tranship film. I'll be happy to ship to Canada via Canada Post when I do my cross-border shopping, but can't guarantee schedule. [GO LEAFS GO!]

Go HABS go...

In Montréal I don't have any problem finding APX 100 and 400 in 35mm, either cartridges or 100ft rolls, so if you need to skip the exchange rate and the border shopping, I can always help.

From what I understand it is 120 (the only useable size for the new apx400...) that is extinct. So far, 35mm is there for the taking.

Argh, better stock on 120 before it's all gone, then!

Habs. Even Nordiques would be fine.

Yes, 120 is "gone", 35mm doesn't seem to be a problem. But even 35mm is not easy to find at retail in some areas, especially smaller cities. For example, here in Rochester, this is the only retail locaction I've found that carries Agfa film.

I talked to John Auer earlier this week and 35mm will remain in production. 120 is gone. Agfa's stock has been depleted. Whatever is left out there is all there is.

Bring back the Jets and the Nordiques!!!

I will have a look in my local Henrys store - every time I go in, the film shelf is getting prgressively eroded by a pile of... ink cartridges. Not even photo specific ones - the same crap you can get at Staples. Why does it need to be there, at a photoshop?
They always had a pile of APX - no one seems to like it - I think I was the only guy who bought it. I think I should have a report by tomorrow night.

What a world... film disappearing right and left, this company or that going under or running away from traditional photography... sports cars with two pedals...Stanley Cup in Tampa... some scary looking quartet of guys on horses, etc.

It's always possible to order Rollei Retro 100 and 400 films. It's APX emulsion and they are doing the confectioning in Hungary now for the 120 rolfilm. So in this way small gaps in the market are filled again.

At 2-3 times the price of regular Agfa. What a deal!

Last price of APX in 120 rolfilm was Eur. 2,60 in NL. APX 120 Rolfilm already disappears here in 2004.
So this Retro film for Eur. 2,90 is more expensive (Eur. 0,30, just over 10%) but not 4-5 times. I am afraid that film prices will rise more and more to the new Ilford level which can be 40% more.

I think users must be happy with smaller manufacturers like Rollei/Maco, Foma, Forte to have some more choice in B&W film.

I'm extremely happy with all of these manufacturers since I sell all of their film.

I do have to correct my post though it should have been 2-3 times the price.

However, we both know what the going rate for APX 100 120 has been in Europe over the last year and here in the states it's less the $2 a roll at some places. By the time the Rollei film arrive over here it's going to be $5+ a roll. Not exactly a deal, and while prices are rising on film, it's not just a price increase. It's a whole new price level for the same film that sold here for as little as $1.89 a roll. Yes, Ilford is raising their prices again. So is everybody. But I don't think we'll see $5+ a roll fp4 120 anytime soon. All I'm trying to get you to admit is that you're paying a premium for the Rollei name. Pure and simple with no value added.

Slitting and confectioning 120 rolfilm in relativ small quantities is expensive so I do not think Eur. 2,90 is for the Netherlands a too expensive price level. Maybe for you in the USA where Agfa dumped their film in the last years for very low prices, even under the German price level which has been 15-20% less than in our country in the past years.

But you indicated already that all prices are rising. The Rollei R3 120 rolfilm is about the same price level than Ilford Delta (around Eur. 4,00) in Holland but the export to USA made it a very expensive film.

I see some interesting development in films. Smaller companies are more interested in the more special films like very fine grain low speed film and I.R. film. Let's hope there will be enough market for it to succeed in these special production.

OK, I give up. Rollei isn't getting any premium for lending their name to Maco. Thanks for the clarification.

Rollei and Maco made a new modest investment in films, together with some strategic partners in the film (production) business.

For the new brand they choose the Rollei name, sure for marketing reasons, no doubt about this.
They try to fill the gaps which are left by a production stop of the special films and 120 rolfilms worldwide from the multinationals.

All their small bulk packings are made to minimize overall costs in small film productions. For the quantity of the special film products, they look nice and are a realistic solution for their problem.

Bye the way: Never give up in film business.

Best regards,

Robert

FWIW, Rochester Photographic has some 120 APX stock left.
