I did a search and could only find old threads about the RC variety. Has anyone tried the Adorama house brand of fiber paper? It's priced at $1/sheet for 11x14, so it's really tempting. Any opinions or info appreciated. Thanks.

It's been awhile since I've used it and the manufacturer may have changed, but I liked it. I thought it was good stuff. It was rumored that Ilford made the RC paper for Adorama and they may have made the FB version as well; don't know who makes it now. Perhaps Kentmere?

It was fun to actually watch this paper fix in the tray under the safelight. You could see the "milky haze" of the silver halide disappear in the fix.

I hope it's not Kentmere, because that's what I'm running from!

Its foma paper if you are talking about the EDU.Ultra stuff. I used it in a black and white photography class I took last semester. Its good, but the emulsion is like glue as it dries. I couldn't use the print drier or even a blotter book because it would cement itself to whatever it touched while drying. Had to air dry.

Dear cbphoto,

Give it a try. They have a 10 8x10 sheet sample pack for $5.57. Dead Link Removed

Even a 25 sheet pack is only $12.75.

Good luck,

One of the sales people at Adorama told me that the paper stock for their new house brand was made in the Czech Republic, and coated in England. I have no way of knowing if this is true or not. That's what I was told. I tried sample packs of both the RC and FB versions of the paper. The old stuff was good and this is just as good, though a little bit faster (by about 1/2 stop) under my enlarger. It's closest and best competition, Arista.EDU Ultra, is good too but very different. Arista.EDU Ultra is slightly warm and warms up considerably in selenium. Adorama paper is much colder, and doesn't show an appreciable tone change in selenium. The Adorama paper is a bit more "punchy" through the middle and lower values too. I like them both. It's nice to have papers with different signatures. Choose the one that works for the image you want to create.

They told me the same thing. I guess I was wondering if "coated in England" meant Ilford or Kentmere. I was hoping for Ilford.

It's not the money, it's the time. If I just went and tried everything I was curious about, I'd never accomplish anything! The internet is here to help us to not reinvent the wheel constantly.

Does it matter? Ilford owns Kentmere and has for a while now. Do you think they're still running two separate coating plants? Personally I don't care where the stuff comes from. It's a good product at a very economical price and worth the effort to try it.

I'm using Kentmere VC FB right now, and it doesn't work for high contrast prints at all. Ilford does. That's why I'm asking.

I use Kentmere all the time and it works fine for contrasty. Perhaps you need to develop longer. Kentmere is not as contrasty as Ilford.

I've found, and others here confirmed, that Kentmere does not respond to filtration over about G3.5. It works great for me below that. Lovely cold tone.

I tried a couple of sheets of the Adorama FB VC Glossy last night, and it did not seem to respond to high contrast filtration. It looks like Kentmere to me, but I can't confirm that from one rather loose test.

I just recently purchased both the fiber vc and the pearl pack and both I am getting really inconsistent results. I am thinking the price savings means really old stock

Can you email me a couple of pictures of the results, your order number & any serial numbers from the outside of the pack? Helen@adorama.com

I've used both the FB and RC varieties of the paper over the last year or so.

I use a Beseler PM2L to set print exposure. Typically pick a skin tone or black point. I use LPD to develop.

My results have been very consistent, so consistent in fact that as long as I have a good point to measure from the negative I don't even bother with small test strips. I'm typically ready to make sure there's no stray dust and decide on burn and dodge.

For me this paper has printed identically across my last three separate orders, I haven't kept track of batch numbers.

As to grade I've had no negatives that have really needed grade 4 or 5 but I experimented with a few prints just for fun in those ranges. All I can say is that on my enlarger I was still seeing changes in the print between the various filtrations.

On the rare occasion that I thought I was going to need a higher grade I've typically found that an exposure change generally fixed the problem or that my reference point wasn't what/where I thought it was. (Read I goofed setting my camera exposure).

Granted our subject matter and tastes may differ, but I sure enjoy this paper.

I printed on Adorama FB Matte 11x14 yesterday. It seems to have quite a bit of purple tint in the shadow area. I, too, almost never print beyond grade 4 or 5 so I have no idea how it will respond. No issues on consistency.

The matte-ness of the paper was little less than that of Ilford. Sort of more like semi-matte than matte, almost close to pearl surface. I hand color. It took color pencils just fine though. I'm going to selenium tone it to see if I can get rid of the purple.
