I realise that the 5x7 film is a few mm smaller, but would it be usable ie would the rails still hold it in?? I ask as I may sell out of 5x4 for 5x7 and have come by some new 5x7 and 13x18 holders, hence the question as the 13x18s are new and using them would be a bonus. (i spose I could also try to source 13x18 film from Ilford so I could use fp4 in both fomats in teh same camera?

I'm curious to.

http://www.geocities.com/thombell/filmsheet.html

Thom Bell's website doesn't give targets for 5x7 film but does for 13x18 film. Seems the smallest size for 13x18 film is 5"x7". The problem is 5x7 film is smaller then that. Will 5x7 film fit? Maybe if the film holder has wide rails. If you have some 13x18 holders why not measure?

Personally I'm wondering if 5x7 lith film will fit. IIRC lith film really is the size mentioned.

I have the holders but no film as I am not shooting it yet (and may not...). I could measure it but dont know whether film being say, 1mm bigger than the gap between rails would be OK or whether it could pop out. The holders are fidelity and absolutely identical apart from the rails inside masking down the 5x7 a tad. I just wondered if anyone had tried 5x7 film in 13x18 holders....wondered if there was a simple answer. We always live in hope!

I recall that J and C regularly stocks 13x18 film on their website. I think Photowarehouse will cut FP-4 to whatever demensions you specify. MR FOTO can supply you with 5" wide rolls of aerial film(nice!) that you can cut to whatever length you want (but alas, that wouldn't help with the width) I've sometimes come across great deals in cm film so IMHO, it wouldn't be too bad of an idea to have a few 13x18 holders stashed so you can take advantage of the situation.

Cheers!

in a word NO the film will not fit 5x7 holders and conversely the 13x18 will not fit the 5x7 film either

Tom

There is some variation in how manufacturers cut 5x7 and 13x18. Some try and split the difference and make a one size fits all cut. Others actually cut 2 different sizes.

I just put a sheet of Efke PL100 5x7 in a Fidelity 13x18 holder. The rails barely hold it in place but is is held flat in the holder.

Sometimes.

That's the main problem - it works sometimes, and sometimes it doesn't. 5x7" film may fall out of 13x18cm holders, but sometimes it stays in. Same the opposite way - sometimes a 13x18cm film will fit in a 5x7" holder, but sometimes it will be too tight and the film will bend so you crush it when reinserting the dark slide.

I measured the few 5x7 holders I have. The distance between the rails is just over 120mm. With 13x18 film supposedly being at least 127mm I don't think it would fit my 5x7 holders.
