360mm/14" for 7x17

Hi,

I have been using Wide Field Ektar for 7x17 format, and I realized that it is too wide for me. So, I am looking for something around 360mm/14" which will be something closer to 35mm in 35mm format.

I just wanted to know which lens will cover this format. Thank you for your time.

The G Claron will cover 12X20 so it should cover 7X17 with tons of movement.

I have a 14" f6.3 Kodak Ektar. I just recently won an auction for a 7x17 so will be testing out whether this lens covers the format.
anyone have similiar experience using this lens with the format? if so, Ill be in luck and it could be a lens you could look for on the used market. I got mine for incredibly cheap and its a gorgeous lens.

Most older 14" Dagors will do it with room to spare. The more recent Gold Dot version made by Kern for Schneider just barely covers and the corners are a bit soft. Also the Fuji-W 360mm covers 7x17.

Just looking at the price of good modern lenses in this focal length the Fuji-W that Kerik mentions is one of the best bargains. The 360mm Fujinon-W almost covers 12X20 so it will do 7X17 with a lot of movement.

Another economical choice often available on ebay is the 360mm f/5.6 Symmar convertible, most often seen in Compound #5. You see this lens often in excellent condition for $500 or less and it actually covers 12X20. And if you have never looked at the ground glass with an f/5.6 aperture get ready for a treat.

14" Dagors will cover 7X17 really well, but they will typically cost two or three times more than the above lenses and for that reason are, IMHO, really over-priced (at least if the major criteria is coverage on 7X17) when compared to the lenses such as the 360 Fujinon-W, the 360 mm Symmar, and the 355 G-Claron mentioned earlier.

I have noticed no corner softness with my Gold Dot Dagor on 7x17. There might be some lens variation (mine was from the last run, about 1988) or it may be that I rarely shoot below f45. I have always found this to be a thrilling lens, and the Copal 3 is a joy compared to the lens cap method.

I also have used the 10 in. WFE on my 7x17 Korona, but found way too much fall off at the corners. I agree that it adds "wide" to wide and is just too much.

Although I don't have it any more, mine was probably earlier. It was a single-coated, not MC version, but that wouldn't have a direct effect on corner sharpness. I tested it at several small f/stops, and never got the corners to sharpen well enough. Plus, I sold it and bought a 14" Goerz Dagor in a compur shutter for less than half the price. And the Goerz Dagor covers 12x20, while the Schneider did not. The Schneider was othewise a great lens, though!
